With the deepest sorrow, we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of James Joseph Lanigan, aged 61, on July 16, 2025. Born in Philadelphia on June 8, 1964, Jim was the beloved husband of Theresa (née Zwirblis) and a devoted father to Stephanie (Ryan), Jimmy, and Patrick. He is also survived by his siblings Colleen, Missy, Kevin and Joe, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James George and Mary Rita (née Gallagher).

Jim lived a life rooted in service, duty, and dedication-to his country, his community, and above all, his family. He proudly served 20 years in both the United States Army, where he earned the rank of Sergeant, and the United States Air Force where he earned the rank of Master Sergeant. His last assignment was to be the First Sergeant of the 514th Mission Support Squadron, later renamed the Force Support Squadron, in the 35th Aerial Port Squadron, stationed at Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, before retiring from military service in 2008. His commitment to public service continued through a 30-year career as a Philadelphia Police Officer. Jim was assigned to the 35th District, 92nd District, AID and Airport Unit. Jim retired fully in May 2024, capping off decades of selfless dedication.

Jim treasured time with his family, especially at their camper, and loved traveling to see Minor League Baseball games across the country. He will be remembered for his deep sense of duty, his quiet generosity, and his steadfast presence in the lives of so many. To those who knew him, he was dependable, kind, and deeply respected-someone who lived his life with integrity and purpose. No one ever had a bad word to say about him.

Outside of his career, Jim found joy and connection through amateur radio. Using his grandfather's callsign, WA3ERQ, he made countless contacts around the world and was an active member of the Holmesburg Radio Club and Philmont Mobile Radio Club. Even in retirement, his sense of service remained strong-he was a proud member of Bensalem VFW Post 9220 and American Legion Post 920.

A public viewing will be held at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home 10975 Academy Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154 on Thursday, July 24, 2025, with a viewing from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a service. at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place on Tuesday, July 29, 11:30 AM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police - Lodge 5 Survivors Fund.
