James John Maciejko Ph.D.

James John Maciejko, age 71 years, of Bloomfield Hills, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024.
James was born on August 20, 1952 to Stanley and Helen Maciejko in Detroit. After James graduated from Austin Catholic High School in 1970, he went to study Chemistry at Hope College. After completing his bachelor's degree in Chemistry, James completed a Master's degree in Physiology and a Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physiology and Metabolism from Michigan State University. He completed fellowships in Pharmacology and Lipidology at Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic and Foundation.
James has served as a member of medical staff for a number of hospitals in the metropolitan Detroit area, including Sinai Grace hospital, Botsford Hospital, Beaumont Hospital and Ascension St. John Hospital. During his career, he has received many accolades for his numerous scientific contributions, publications, advisory roles in multiple professional associations and editorial roles for numerous reputable journals. Most notable awards include Teacher of the Year, Detroit Top Doctor, and AAFP Outstanding Scientific Research Award. During his tenure as a Lipidologist, he has mentored numerous students, residents, fellows and faculty. He has also served as the Principal Investigator for over twenty research studies. In 2015, James diagnosed an extremely rare (1 in 1,000,000) condition in four brothers and implemented therapy that changed the trajectory of their disease.
James was predeceased by his brother Mark and his parents, Stanley and Helen Maciejko. He is survived by his nephews (Justin and Matthew) and great niece (Liliana).
Visitation will be held on April 5, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors (2600 Crooks Road, Troy, MI). The funeral mass is on Saturday April 6, 2024 at St. Hugo of the Hills Church (2215 Opdyke, Bloomfield Hills) at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hope College and Austin Catholic High School, two institutions James strongly supported and regarded highly."
