James (Jimmy) Gerard May, Sr passed away peacefully at Greenbriar Community Care Center on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at the age of 95 years old. He had resided in Greenbriar since September 2021 after Hurricane Ida.
Predeceased by his beloved wife of 74 years, Gloria Achee May; his parents Clara Arrigo May and Louis James May. He was one of the 11 Children of Clara and Louis May. He was predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters , Louis, Milton, Marion, Enez, Julie, Theresa, Geraldline, Gerard, Betty and Teddy.
He is survived by his children James Gerard May, Jr (The Sue); Suzanne Carol May, and Gary Patrick May (Laura). He is also survived by his grandsons, James Gerard May, III (Angel) and Brandon Christoper May (Angela); along with two Great Grandsons Nathan Charles May and Grayson Tyler May. He is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Barbara May (wife of Teddy May).
He married Gloria Achee on November 29, 1951, while he was home on leave from the US Navy. He and Gloria were both born and raised in Mid City, New Orleans. For the first year of their marriage, they resided in San Francico California where he was stationed. They visited San Francisco many times during their lives because it held a special place in their hearts.
In 2008, when Gloria became ill and was placed in a nursing home. He was by her side every day from the time she woke up until she went to sleep at night.
He worked for many years in the airline business which afforded him and his family the opportunity to travel. He especially loved the mountains of Colorado and Utah and loved to ski. By far, his greatest love was being in his boat "The Suzie Q II" and fishing or crabbing. He loved sharing is catch with those he knew would enjoy them. He clocked many hours on the water with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also had a few adventures on the water with his best friend Fred " Andy" Bologna. They spent countless hours on plans and projects and never tired of each other's company.
He said to be happy in life…." You only need three things
· Someone to love
· Something to do
And
· Something to look forward to.
He provided that and much more for many of us. Dad we want to thank you for the love, the laughter and the guidance you brought into our lives. You will remain in our hearts, until we meet again.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive,
Metairie, La 70001. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A private burial will take place in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
