James Gilbert Oakes passed away suddenly at Flagler Hospital on November 14, 2025. He was born on August 21, 1946 in Blaine, TN to Ruth and Harry Oakes. He was pre-deceased by both parents, a sister (Chris Oakes), mother-in-law (Stella Gilliam), and sister-in-law (Freida Wright). Survived by his wife (Debbie) and 2 children: Jay Oakes (Christina), and Reagan Oakes.
Gilbert met Deborah "Debbie" Oakes in Knoxville, TN where he was employed by the City of Knoxville Traffic Engineering Department in 1982. They celebrated 42 years of marriage on November 12th this year. He was one of the earliest Mr. Moms in the US when Jay was four. The Oakes family moved to St. Augustine in 1996, where they raised their children.
Proud Pappaw of 2: Noah and Grayson Oakes. Gilbert had 2 sisters Marie Oakes McKee and Janet Oakes Spradlin (David). As well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was also the great-uncle for several boys and girls.
Gilbert loved sports of any kind, especially UT Vols football, basketball, and softball. Gilbert never missed a game or golf match that Reagan or Jay played in. He spent many seasons coaching them, too. He was happiest at the ball fields.
Gilbert loved God, his family, and his country very much. He will be missed by many, but the legacy he leaves behind will continue for generations.
A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 PM; Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Moultrie Baptist Church (3699 US Hwy 1 South, St. Augustine, FL). We request that donations be made in Gilbert's name to St. Augustine Little League, or your favorite charity instead of flowers.
