James Powless Obituary
Jim was born in Flora, Illinois on December 28, 1938 to the late Roy and Margaret (Elwyn) Powless. He was a 1957 graduate of Bosse High School. Jim served on the Evansville Fire Department, retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed traveling and spending time in Gulf Shores during the winter with his wife, Barb. Jim was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Cardinals, and any team his family played on or coached. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He supported his family in any and all of their endeavors. Jim will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Jamia Wildt and Julie Mullen (Greg); sons, Mike Powless (Diane) and Tad Powless (Krystal); brother, Ronald Powless (Jane); grandchildren, Scott Moore (Allison), Stephanie Moore, Kimberly Griffin (Josh), Jamie Powless, Stephan Mullen (Amber), Kaci Powless, Katelyn Cron (Logan), Karley Powless, and Adam Wildt; great-grandchildren, Riley Moore, Jack Moore, Tucker Moore, Caiden Moore, Claire Griffin, Avery Moore, Fionn Griffin, Aubrey Cron, Mary Louise Griffin, Nora Cron, Lila Mullen, Chase Michael Powless, Bo Lewis Mullen, and Landon Wildt; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 56 years, Barbara Ann (Kirves) Powless; grandson, Allen Wildt; sister, Carolyn Barfield; brother, David Powless; and son-in-law, Tim Wildt.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 8, 2025 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711, with Scott Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 10:00 am until service time on Monday, December 8, 2025 at Browning Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Evansville Firefighters Local 357 Honor Guard, 550 SE 8th St., Evansville, IN 47713.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of The Wyndmoor of Evansville and North River for their compassionate care of Jim.
