In the gentle embrace of the afternoon sun, upon the 13th day of July in the year 2025, the noble James "Jim" Robert Riley, Jr., a man of mirth and kindness, did depart from this mortal coil in the serene island town of Anna Maria, Florida. He was born under the summer's warmth in the year 1954 (Norfolk, Virginia Naval Hospital), was raised in Tampa and has resided in Anna Maria for the last 26 years. Mother, Elsie Wallace Cannon (deceased), was Jim's first love, best teacher, and eternal inspiration. His life journey was one of purpose and joy, spreading laughter and goodwill wherever he ventured.
Jim, known affectionately to kin and comrades as a man of great spirit, was a deeply cherished husband to his beloved wife of 37 years, Janet Green Riley. Together, they navigated life's vast ocean, weathering storms and basking in the sun's glow with equal grace. He was a brother of deep affection to Keith Cannon (Susan), and to Kimberly Cannon Moore (Rick). His light shone brightly as an uncle to Ashley Patamasank (Jaren and sons Connor and Austin), and to his nephew, Tyler. In the tapestry of life, his threads intertwined with cousins Clint Baker (Cathy), and Sheila Hamilton (Andy). The bonds of family were further strengthened by his kin by marriage, sisters Sherri Green Peterson (former husband Douglas) and their daughters Christina (Chris), Kimberly and great nieces, Grace and Anna, and the memory of his sister-in-law Shirl Green. His brother-in-law Steven Green (Lisa) and (former wife Catherine) and their children Neil (Anna), Brendan (Jennifer and son Tommy), and Gavin (Anna), also shared in the warmth of his affection.
Jim's quest for knowledge was noble and true, as he tread the hallowed halls of Brandon High School in Brandon, Florida, and further pursued the art of commerce at HCC and USF, studying the science of business with a keen eye and an open heart. In the realm of trade, he was both a valiant salesman and a sagacious business owner within the industrial water and wastewater treatment equipment industry. His counsel and camaraderie were sought by many, and his presence within his profession was marked by integrity and wit.
Though his soul was not bound by the strictures of organized creed, Jim was a man deeply spiritual, finding solace and wonder in the mysteries of life and the natural world. His passions were uncomplicated, finding joy in the dance of a fishing line upon the water, the serenity found while boating, the thrill of competition on the tennis and racquetball courts, comfort listening to a broad spectrum of music, tasty spirits shared with friends, sport spectating, and the marvels revealed through his many travels. Jim's essence was best captured by the words of the immortal bard, William Shakespeare, who once penned, "With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come." Though he lived with Parkinson's Disease, his humor was a beacon of light, his friendliness a harbor for souls in need of shelter, and his thoughtfulness a wellspring of comfort to all who knew him. In the spirit of the classic poets, we are reminded by John Keats that "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." Jim, indeed, was a thing of beauty - his memory a perpetual joy to all graced by his presence.
Let us not mourn, but rather celebrate the legacy of Jim Riley, a man who walked among us as a beacon of light, laughter and love. His story, woven into the lives of those he touched, shall be recounted with fondness and smiles, as he embarks upon his final voyage to the undiscovered country, from which no traveler returns.
Rest in peace, our beloved Jim.
