James T. Sherren (Jim) age 85, of Ventura California, passed away on April 26, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Jim was born in Price, Utah to James T. Sherren, Sr., and Eileen Simmons Sherren on May 15, 1938. Jim is survived by his wife, Denise McCracken Sherren of Ventura, his children: Randy (Cynthia) Sherren of Oakland, CA, Thomas (Paulina) Sherren of Westlake Village, and Amanda Sherren of Los Angeles, his stepchildren: Ericka Maloney, Lauren Halko and Alexander Janckila. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Gabriella Sherren, Jasmine Sherren, Isabelle Sherren, True Elder, Anthony Janckila, Bradley Humphrey, Hailey Humphrey and Tommy Sherren. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Anne Wimber and Robert Sherren. He is also survived by his siblings: Kathy Fisher of Utah and Edward Sherren of Texas.
Jim served in the Army National Guard of Utah and a missionary tour in Australia. Jim had a distinguished career as a trial attorney. He received his Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and a J.D. from the University of California Bolt Hall, Berkeley. He practiced as a public defender in Alameda County, and a deputy district attorney at Ventura County. He was a partner at the firm of Benton, Orr, Duval and Buckingham, having worked there for over 30 years.
Jim was a past member of the Ventura County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Jim loved his family immensely. He enjoyed getting together and playing competitive family games. Early in life he obtained his pilot's license and flew his family to Utah for holidays. He was an avid tennis player until he had his first hip replacement and afterwards played golf. Jim was an expert bridge player and played throughout his life. He was fascinated with events and people of the civil war and traveled in his motor home to various war sites throughout the country. Jim was known for his dry wit, his dramatic irony, his inquisitiveness and as a gentleman.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 12 Noon in the BOYKO & REARDON TELEGRAPH ROAD MORTUARY & CREMATION, 15 Teloma Drive, Ventura. In leu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
