James Swick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by All County Funeral Home & Crematory - Treasure Coast Chapel on Mar. 21, 2023.
James (Jim) Swick, 66 of Lake Worth, passed away at home on March 16, 2023. He was born in Glenridge, NJ, to Richard and Karen Swick and spent his childhood in Warren, PA. Jim graduated from Grove City College with a Bachelor's in Music Education and later achieved his Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Mathematics from Penn State University.
Early in his career, he taught high school math for the Palm Beach County School District and was actively involved in both the NCTM and the FCTM. He was recognized for his contribution to teaching as the recipient of the William Dwyer Award for Excellence in Education and the PBCCTM teacher of the year award. After a brief tenure as a Data Analyst with the School District, Jim went on to teach as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Palm Beach Atlantic University. He also served on the selection committee for the Pathfinder Scholarship, graded AP Statistics exams, and volunteered on numerous committees. Jim was passionate about teaching and helped to make math less intimidating and more enjoyable for the myriad of students with whom he shared a classroom.
He enjoyed running, participated in many races, and completed the Disney Marathon twice. He was also an avid reader and the handyman for many people in the community. He enjoyed spending time with his family and relished his annual vacation to Orlando with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also loved playing piano, camping, eating curry, and enjoying a beverage at his favorite brewery, NOBO.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kim, his sons Troy and Jonathan, his daughter, Kathryn (Nick), his three granddaughters, Kaela, Kylie, and Khloe, his brother, Gary (Jeanine), his sister, Beth, and his parents, Richard and Karen.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian, 4601 S Flagler Dr., West Palm Beach, FL 33405, on Sunday, March 26th at 12:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation could be made to Trustbridge Hospice to whom the family is extraordinarily grateful, or to the Karen Swick Mathematics Award, an annual award to a promising, returning student majoring in mathematics.
