Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Home on Jul. 9, 2025.
Mr. James "Ajax" Robert Warren, age 77, of
Tallapoosa, GA, joined his favorite dancing partner and beloved wife in heaven on May 29, 2025. He was born February 8, 1948 in Villa Rica, GA to the late James AG Warren and Sarah Kate Brown Warren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Otilla McElroy Warren and sister, Debbie Alexander.
Ajax graduated with the West Haralson High School Class of 1966. After high school he went to work for Stoffel Seals Corp. in Tallapoosa, R.W. Rankin, and Star Steel Co. in Cedartown. He became a jack of all trades, working with tag machines, helping welders, operating hydro-lifts and backhoes, and working as a sheer operator. He would later retire from US Can Company in Tallapoosa after many years of service.
In April of 1967 he received his draft notice for the United States Army and in May he left for basic training at Fort Benning with several of his friends: Ronnie Deese, Barry League, Bobby Ridley, and Floyd Mann. He was later sent to Fort McClellan for an Advanced Infantry Training Course before being deployed for the Vietnam War. He spent 11 months in Vietnam, serving in Company C, 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry. The movie "Platoon" famously portrayed one of the battles in which Ajax fought.
Just a few short months after his Honorable Discharge from the Army, he married his sweetheart, Otilla, on August 2, 1969. Together, they made a family of girls that they loved dearly. Ajax loved to coon hunt, fish, tend to his bees, and tell stories from his back porch swing with his granddaughters listening to his every word. He collected antique Ford trucks and cars, the faster and louder the better. He collected vintage jukeboxes and loved to dance to them in the kitchen with his beloved "Tilly." Although his family and friends will miss him dearly, they find comfort knowing he's at peace and dancing with her once again.
Ajax is survived by his daughters and son in law, April and Chris Roberts and Heather McCain, all of Tallapoosa; granddaughters, Emma Roberts Williams (Bryce Williams), Molly Roberts, Lillian McCain, and Libby McCain; great grandson, Bo Williams; sister, Margaret Ayers; and brother in law, Donnie Alexander, both of Carrollton, GA.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 2:00PM in the Miller Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel with April Roberts, Heather McCain, and Emma Williams speaking. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Chris Roberts, Vic McElroy, Wade McElroy, Micah McElroy, Tony Lord, Cole McElroy, Blakely Johnson, and Ben McCain. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Chandler, Ronnie Deese, Ronnie Smith, Willard Ballew, David Hicks, and Terry Shealy. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery with the Haralson County Veterans Association providing military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00PM.
