Jane Calvert (nee Drake) of Evansville, IN died peacefully on September 30, 2023, while staying with her son, Brian, in Los Angeles, CA. A beloved wife and mother, she is preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Bob, and by her son, Scott.
Born in Central City, KY and raised in Newport News, VA, Jane was an only child of parents who instilled in her values such as independence and kindness. She would dutifully care for and, sadly, bury both parents while in her early twenties.
She returned to Evansville where she married and lived with Bob and raised their children. Theirs was a partnership that stood the test of time and was a shining example of enduring love and commitment. The home they created made guests feel welcomed and their children feel safe. It is in this environment Bob and Jane molded Brian and Scott into men they became.
Unfortunately, Jane would again be called upon to become a caregiver for those closest to her: first Bob following a disabling illness and then Scott as he battled a long illness, ultimately losing both. Not surprisingly, she is remembered as a fierce protector of her family, a pillar of strength and source of inspiration to all who knew her. Jane was also a devoted elementary school math teacher known for her warmth and the gentle expectations she placed on students to encourage them to lean into their abilities and achieve their full potential. Those in the afterlife should be warned, however, to pay attention and listen-up when Jane uses her "teacher's voice."
From her personal experience knowing life to be transitory and not to be taken for granted, Jane faced life simply and with intent. She led her family, her students, and her community with love and understanding and she met challenges directly and with grace. In her typical, self-effacing way, she often referred to herself as 'Plain Jane' but she will be remembered as an extraordinary person by those who knew, loved and now miss her.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 1800 St George Road in Evansville October 29, 2023 beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. At 1 p.m., she will be eulogized by Brian. The burial will be private.
