Jane Wunderlich Niederberger died in her home in Surf City, North Carolina on March 16, 2024 at the age of 98. Jane was an educator, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born August 26, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Gilbert Wunderlich and Teresa Burkley Wunderlich. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1946 and taught in high schools before her marriage to Robert B. Niederberger in 1948. They eventually settled in Severna Park, Maryland where they raised their eight children. After her children entered school, she resumed her teaching career. She earned a Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Maryland in 1971. She held a number of positions on the faculty of Anne Arundel County Schools including serving as the principal of the Barbara Augustin Center for the Severely and Profoundly Handicapped. She was active in many community and service groups and was a founding member of the Severna Park branch of the American Association of University Women. After the death of her husband Bob in 2002 she and her daughter Janet bought side-by-side townhomes in Surf City, North Carolina. Jane moved there in 2003 and Janet joined her full time after her retirement in 2010. Jane was an avid knitter who provided expertly crafted gifts of all kinds to family and friends over the years and led a knitting group at the Senior Center in Hampstead. She was an active member and Sunday School teacher at Episcopal churches in Severna Park and Hampstead (St. Martin's and Holy Trinity) and served on the vestry of Wade Chestnut Memorial Chapel in Surf City.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Niederberger of Surf City, NC, daughter Jean Niederberger (Anthony Matise) of Mandeville, Louisiana, son Allan Niederberger (Linda) of Romney, WV, son Thomas Niederberger (Sharon) of Boonesboro, MD, son Roy Niederberger (Susana Beltran) of Chestertown, MD, daughter Judith Bain (Jeffrey) of Saratoga Springs, NY, Paula Niederberger of Walkersville, Maryland, widow of Robert Niederberger Jr.; 15 grandchildren, Michael Niederberger (Kristy), Jessica Niederberger, Danielle Kerr (Steven), Rachel Niederberger, Antonia Gladney (Eric), Jesse Niederberger (Jennifer), Greg Niederberger (Nadine), Heather Dupre (Sam), Brian Niederberger, Kristina Niederberger, Douglas Niederberger, Kayla Niederberger, Zachary Bain (Meghan Maupin), Ian Bain (Samantha), and Nick Bain (Natalie); 18 great-grandchildren, Shawn Ward, Christopher Niederberger, Samantha Niederberger, Annabelle Niederberger, Sarah Niederberger, Timothy Niederberger, Zachary Kerr, Gabriella Kerr, Michael Kerr, Andrew Niederberger, Wyatt Niederberger, Sophia Dupre, Oliver Dupre, Dominick Meunier, Nathan Meunier, Ripley Gladney, Max Bain and Imogen Bain.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Niederberger and two sons, Robert Niederberger and William Niederberger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hampstead, NC. The service will be followed by a reception in the narthex.
