Canandaigua - Jane Ogden, a lifelong musician, devoted mother and grandmother, and dedicated community leader, passed away peacefully, on October 17, 2025, at the age of 98.
Jane was born in Syracuse, NY, and was the daughter of Harold and Susan (Behnke) Overhiser. She discovered her love for music early in life, beginning piano lessons at age seven. Jane went on to study at Syracuse University, graduating with a degree in piano performance and organ. Her first professional role was as organist and choir director at the Reformed Church in Syracuse.
In 1951, after marrying Richard E. Ogden (who predeceased her), Jane moved to Canandaigua, where she would make her home for the rest of her life. She became an integral part of the First Congregational Church community - first as a substitute organist, then as full-time organist for nearly 25 years. In addition to her musical contributions, Jane taught Sunday school, served as Superintendent of the Primary Department, directed the bell choir, acted as Moderator several times, served as both a Trustee and Deacon, and founded the church newsletter The Chronicles.
Beyond the church, Jane gave generously of her time and talents to the wider Canandaigua community. She served on the boards of the Ontario Children's Foundation, Woodlawn Cemetery, and was President of the Board at Clark Manor. She was also an enthusiastic participant in several social and civic groups, including the Shufflers, Current Events Club, and numerous bridge clubs.
Jane is survived by two children, Janet (David) Ozsvath and Ken (Lee) Ogden; her grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Danny and David; two newly born great grandchildren, Julia and Bella. Her family remembers her as a woman of deep faith, enduring grace, and quiet strength, whose music and service touched the lives of many.
A memorial service to celebrate Jane's life will be held on Monday, October 27, at 11:00am at the First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jane's memory to the Ontario Children's Foundation, P.O. Box 82, Canandaigua, NY 14424 or First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua, NY 14424 or the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center, 350 Parrish St., Canandaigua, NY 14424.
