Janice “Jan” Eileen (Robertson) Mitchell, age 87, of Bradenton, Florida, formerly of Grinnell IA, passed away on March 2, 2026. She was born in Mahaska County, Iowa on December 30, 1938, the daughter of Eugene & Bessie (Fisher) Robertson.
Jan attended school in Evans, Pella, Rose Hill, Barnes City and Deep River, Iowa, graduating from Deep River High School in May of 1957. She was united in marriage with Richard “Dick” Mitchell on August 10, 1957 and were married for 46 years. Jan & Dick began their married life in Montezuma and later moved to Grinnell. They were blessed with two children, Sonja and Richard II “Rick”.
Jan was a stay at home mom until her youngest child was in school. She was employed by Cargill Seeds from 1968 – 1987, and then with Grinnell Federal Savings retiring in 1998. She and her husband Dick enjoyed traveling to many places in the U.S., and wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona.
She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the Grinnell Jayceettes and the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). During Jan’s membership with ABWA she was awarded the honor of being named the 1985 Business Woman of the Year for the Poweshiek County Chapter.
She loved doing crafts and especially enjoyed working with her grandchildren on craft projects. In Jan’s later years she enjoyed following several football and basketball teams, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa Cyclones and the Indiana Fever.
Jan is survived by her daughter Sonja (Robert) Roe of Poinciana, Florida and her son Rick (Martha) Mitchell of Bradenton, Florida; four grandchildren, Travis (Traci) Roe of Avon, Ohio, Nolan (Mary) Roe of Bel Air, Maryland. Anthony (Kayla) Mitchell of Celina, Texas and Cecilia Mitchell of Des Moines, Iowa; Seven great grandchildren; Adele, Alana & Annie Roe of Avon, OH, Mason & Emily Roe of Bel Air, MD, and Emerson & Wesley Mitchell of Celina, TX. Also a brother Dale Robertson of Hebbronville, TX and a sister Kay (Myrle) Bailey of Centerville, Ohio, Brother-in-law Robert Mitchell of Newton, IA, Sisters-in-law Kathleen Blain of Montezuma, IA, Betty “BJ” Jessen of Des Moines, IA, Judy Robertson of Cedar Rapids, IA, and special friend Kent Rasmussen along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard “Dick” in 2003, her parents, Eugene & Bessie Robertson, parents-in-law Ernest & Berneice Mitchell, a sister Beth Ann, two brothers James & Kenneth Robertson, sister-in-law Helen Robertson, brothers-in-law Marvin Blain & Morris “Mike” Jessen.
A memorial service for Jan will be held this summer in Grinnell, IA. The date is still to be determined. Memorial Contributions can be made to Tidewell Hospice, in honor of Janice Mitchell
