Janice Shockney Obituary

Plymouth - Janice Marie Shockney peacefully passed away on Feb. 18, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on Nov. 14, 1942, in Sturgis, MI to Niley and Vada Wisler, Janice dedicated her life to making a difference through education. She resided in Plymouth, where she left an indelible mark on countless students and faculty members over her remarkable 43-year tenure at the Plymouth Community School Corporation.
Janice's educational journey began at an early age, attending first grade at a time when kindergarten was not yet available. She completed her high school education by the age of 17 and pursued her passion for teaching at Manchester College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Janice furthered her education with a Master's Degree in Elementary and Kindergarten Education from Ball State University, which underscored her unwavering commitment to her profession.
Her dedicated career in education began in 1964, teaching in LaGrange and Ligonier, before finding her calling in Plymouth. Janice was not only a first-grade teacher but also contributed to various programs throughout her career, including Deaf Education, Gifted and Talented Classes, and Title Programs. Her dedication earned her recognition as an Outstanding Young Educator and placed her among the top ten teachers in the state of Indiana. Her achievements were matched only by her dedication to her students; she touched the lives of over 2,000 children, inspiring them to reach their fullest potential.
Beyond her professional life, Janice was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, where she shared her love for music in the church choir and playing the piano for over 50 years. She also served the Plymouth community as president of the Plymouth Education Association and was a lifetime member of the Indiana Education Association and National Education Association.
Janice was married to her beloved husband, Richard Allen Shockney, on Dec. 27, 1964. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Bret and Heather, both of whom have continued Janice's legacy of leadership and service. Janice took immense pride in her grandchildren, Ella, Finnegan and McKinley, cherishing every moment spent with them.
In addition to her family, Janice devoted her time to supporting the Plymouth High School Cross Country team with her husband, serving as the cook and team supporter, and actively participated in various community events.
Janice is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Allen; children, Bret (Yvette) Shockney of Annapolis, MD and Heather (Jason) Shockney-Davis of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Ella Shockney, Finnegan Davis, and McKinley Davis; brother, Allen (Mary Ann) Wisler of Howe, IN; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Niley and Vada.
Janice will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Oakhill Cemetery in Plymouth. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at the 1st United Methodist Church with Pastor Lauren Hall officiating.
In honor of Janice, memorial contributions can be directed to the 1st United Methodist Church, 400 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563.
