With a heart full of love and a spirit that radiated warmth, Janis L. Martin's journey on this earth came to a gentle close on October 7th 2025. Janis was born on January 7, 1947, in Savanna, Illinois, to the parents of James and Mildred (Shaw) Peterson. Janis was in a relationship for several years and out of that relationship she was gifted a beautiful daughter Lori. She later married her late husband Arthur Martin on April 4, 1984.
Janis graduated from Savanna High School, class of 1965. She went on to pursue her passion for caring for others by obtaining her LPN license in La Crosse. Her professional journey was marked by an incredible 38 years at Heritage Manor Nursing Home as a dedicated wound care nurse. Her commitment to her community didn't stop there; she also served as a familiar and welcoming face at the Hustle Inn, Hustler, WI., and Target Bluff German Haus restaurant where she waitressed at for 40 years.
Janis was a mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, that left an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched. Her grandchildren, Vanessa and Bridgit, and her nephews. Her circle of love was wide, including her good friends Shawna (Taz) Maki, and Cheri Hopper. Janis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arthur, her daughter Lori, her brother Larry, her sisters Joan and Carol Sue, her cousin Sandy, and her grandson, Sean who were all cherished figures in her life.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Janis was a lifelong learner and an active participant in her community. As a Brownie Girl Scout and Senior Scout, she learned the value of service and friendship. An avid reader, she found joy and escape in the pages of countless books. In her younger years, she was known for her skill in playing pool and card games, and her love for gardening, bowling, and darts showcased her competitive spirit and love for social gatherings. Janis's travels took her across the United States, where she embraced the joy of exploration and the thrill of discovering new places. Yet, no matter where her adventures led her, she always found the most enjoyment in simply having a good time with friends and family.
Janis's story does not end here, for she leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, much like the stars that light up the night sky. We are comforted by the thought that Janis is now reunited with her loved ones who departed before her, and we take solace in knowing that her spirit will always be with us. Janis L. Martin, a beautiful soul, will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A Celebration of life will be held at a later date in Hustler, Wisconsin at Bar Hoppers (formerly known as Hustle Inn). The Hare Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time. www.harefuneralhome.com
