Janis (Johnson) Wingen, 85, of Suffield, CT, beloved wife of Jerry Wingen, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Johnson Memorial Hospital. Born in Canova, SD on July 9, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Sara (Farmer) Johnson.
Jan and Jerry started their married life in Springfield, SD, then moved to Highmore, where Dave Vogelgesang joined their family. Jan was a proud resident of Enfield for 56 years where she raised her sons, taught piano, was President of the Hazardville Little League Women's Auxiliary, drove for Meals on Wheels, and was a league bowler at the Enfield Lanes.
Jan's passion was her family and friends. A perfect day for Jan started on the patio with a phone call from a friend and ended with a family game of Trivial Pursuit. Jan's children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many others enjoy the comfort of her beautifully crocheted blankets.
Jan is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 64 years, Jerry, their sons, Tony and his wife Kris of Mt. Lebanon, PA, Todd and his wife Elise of Southbury, Tim and his wife Terri of Hatboro, PA, and Troy of Suffield. Jan was the beloved NeeNee of her grandchildren Corey (Liz), Sara Wilhelm (Greg), Daniel, Eric, Jessica, Kelly, Jack, Erin, and Matthew, great grandchildren PJ, Caleb, Charlie, Connor, Hannah, and Mae, and her nieces Linda Southwell, Stevie Claridge (Cole) and Camden of Safford, AZ. In addition to her parents, Jan is reunited with her sisters Vera Southwell and Velma Lanier.
Family and friends are invited for visitation from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd, Enfield. Services and burial will be held at a later date. For online condolences, please visit
