Jason Cirone
February 21, 1971 - October 2, 2024
It is with broken hearts that we share the news that our beloved Jason has passed away after a courageous fight for his life. Jason Gerardo Cirone departed this world on October 2, 2024, after a long illness; he was 53 years old.
Jason faced this journey with unimaginable strength, determination, and courage, and his will to live surpassed every timeline the doctors gave him. The loss of Jason has forever changed our family, leaving a void that words cannot express.
Jason was born and raised in Toronto, and at age 15, he left home to begin his hockey career. He played in the NHL and in many professional hockey leagues internationally.
As a member of the Italian National Ice and Inline Hockey Teams, he proudly competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, scoring the first goal of the Olympic Games. He also competed in the World Championships from 2004 to 2008 (ice hockey) and 2003-2004 (inline hockey), winning the bronze medal in 2004.
His post-playing career included coaching and scouting positions for the Asiago Vipers, Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, Flint Generals, Motor City Metal Jackets, Metro Jets, Erie Otters, and Midland University.
As a player, Jason's dedication and resilience helped energize and elevate many teams. Later, Coach Jason applied his lifelong love for hockey to the development of young players, fostering their growth, skill, and passion for the sport. Many of his players went on to achieve remarkable success both on and off the ice, showcasing the skills and values they developed under his guidance, acknowledging his pivotal role in their success.
Off the ice, Jason loved shooting guns, spending time with his dogs, enjoying Italian and barbecue delicacies, shopping on Temu and driving his Cadillac. Jason was a dual citizen of Canada and Italy and loved the best of both countries.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gianbatista "John" Cirone; father-in-law, L. William (Bill) Meyer; and niece, Maygen Bell-Cirone.
He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 30 years, Kristen (Meyer); daughter, Brooke Cirone; son, Mason Cirone; brothers, David (Linda Bell) and Michael (Nicole); mother-in-law, Bonnie Meyer; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Meyer and Julie McFarland (Patrick), many nieces and nephews, his dogs Gigi and Teddy Bear and his grand dog, Blu.
Jason's legacy transcends borders, touching the lives of friends, teammates, and fans alike. His long-standing friendships showcased his loyalty and strength, especially during the challenging times of his illness. The hockey community-spanning the U.S., Italy, Canada, and beyond-remembers him not just as a player, but as a source of inspiration and camaraderie. His spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him, on and off the ice.
Friends and family will gather on Saturday October 26, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm with tributes and a sharing of memories at 1:00 pm at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors, 705 W Eleven Mile Road (4 blks E. of Woodward), Royal Oak 48067.
