Jay Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 20, 2025.
Jay Ellis Allen, 80, a longtime resident of Round Rock, TX, passed away on August 15th 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.

Jay was born on June 13, 1945 in Logan, UT. The son of Alfred Theodore Henson Allen and Zola Bright Allen, he was the youngest of three children, including Reta Allen Spendlove and Dennis Kay Allen. Jay spent much of his childhood growing up in Cove and Lewiston, Utah.

Jay graduated from North Cache High School in 1963. He went on to study at Utah State University in Logan, UT and completed his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science in June 1973.

Jay enlisted in the U.S. Army in April of 1968, just weeks before his draft notice arrived. He was part of the Army Security Agency and served during the Vietnam War until December 1971. He served two tours, Saigon, Vietnam and Asmara, Ethiopia (now Eritrea).

Jay married his lifelong sweetheart, Susan Blair on August 16, 1967 in the LDS Logan Temple in Logan, UT. They were married for 58 years. Jay and Susan had three children; Michael William Allen, Tami Allen Lopez, and Mark Ellis Allen.

Jay worked as a Computer Programmer for Texas Instruments, Beehive Electronics, Ryan McFarland and Liant Software. During Jay's professional career, he often reflected on his time working on the TI-990 minicomputer and development of the prolific COBOL programming language. His expertise with the TI-990 led to several once-in-a-lifetime experiences at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY where TI had been contracted to be the computer services vendor for the event.

Jay was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his life he held many callings with the Church but he especially loved being a primary and Sunday school teacher. He loved working with youth and children, and he loved each and every one of them.

Jay particularly loved working with his Lego's, doing puzzles, and enjoying time with his grandchildren.

Remaining to cherish Jay's memory are his spouse: Susan; children: Michael (Shannon), Tami (Drew), and Mark (Julie); grandchildren: Stephen, Sara, Robyn, Cassidy, Austin, Elisabeth, Tyler, Audrey, Jaxon, Miriam, Avery, and Zola, great-grandchildren: Meredith, Rayland, Brayden, Lincoln, Charlotte, Adeline, Bennett, Walker, Margaret and Carter.

Preceding Jay in death are parents: Alfred Theodore Henson Allen and Zola Bright Allen; brother and sister in law, Dennis Kay & Sherrill Allen; sister, Reta Bright Allen Spendlove; grandson: Christian William Allen; sister and brother in law: Eva Lou & Gordon Wiser.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M Saturday August 23rd at the LDS chapel located at 8140 Racine Trail, Austin, TX 78717.
