Jay Wayne Slaughter, 74, of Clearfield, Utah passed away on August 12, 2024, after complications caused by diabetes.
Jay was born on December 2, 1949, to Wayne and Vonda Colby Slaughter. He was born and raised in
Salt Lake City, Utah. Jay graduated from East High School in 1968, and then attended Westminster College, where he earned a BA in political science.
On March 21, 1965, Jay met Kathy Bobo, the girl he would later marry, at Ritz Classic Bowling Alley. Kathy made sure to get Jay's attention by stealing his shoes, so he'd have to ask for her phone number. They continued dating through junior high and high school and were married on April 3, 1970. Jay enlisted in the Army Reserves and served from 1969 to 1975.
Jay and Kathy were blessed with 3 boys: Wayne, Christopher, and Jeremy. The Slaughter family was sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS temple on January 18, 1986.
Jay worked for Albertson's Grocery Store for 23 years, where he started as a bagger and worked his way up to Store Director. After managing several stores, Jay was able to purchase The Canned Food Store, in Clearfield, Utah. He was loved by both his employees and customers. Jay often donated groceries to people in need and was well known for his community support.
Always an entrepreneur, Jay also owned a few GNC stores, and even ran Independence Day Fireworks stands with help from the whole family. He wasn't afraid of hard work, and he taught his sons the same work ethic.
Throughout Jay's entire life, he was always passionate about birds and cars. From his youth and into adulthood, Jay enjoyed raising pigeons, even having pigeon coops in their backyard in Murray, Utah. Going to the State Fair to see the fancy pigeons was always a fun family experience. Jay loved restoring Ford Mustangs and it was common for him to win first place trophies in any car show that he entered.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carol, son Wayne, and grandson Benson. Jay is survived by his loving wife Kathy, daughter-in-law Amber, sons Anderson, Coleson and daughter Madison of Meridian, ID, son Christopher (Jennifer), daughter Shelby Kendall (Jake), great grandson Wayne, daughters Shaylee, and Samantha of North Ogden, UT, and son Jeremy (Amy), sons Tyler and Finland, and daughters Indianna and Bella of Castle Rock, CO.
Jay will be remembered by his friends and family for his constant teasing and love of his family. One of Jay's favorite jokes was to ask you to come here, and then say where would you be if I hadn't called you over here? Although we were all used to hearing Jay's jokes, we look back now with fond memories and wish Jay were here to tease us just one last time.
A visitation with family will be held on Monday, August 19th at the Heritage LDS Ward, 725 South 200 East, Layton, Utah beginning at 11 am. Funeral services will follow at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would be very grateful for any donations to assist with funeral expenses and Kathy's future care.
