Jay Clinton Thompson, 72, of Petersburg, Texas passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2025 in Petersburg, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Petersburg, Texas with Sean Galloway officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview, Texas.
Jay was born on July 21, 1953 to J.C. and Ruby Thompson in Plainview, Texas. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1972. While in high school Jay was recognized as an “All South Plains” running back. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army from 1975 to 1978 and spent one tour in Germany. Jay worked as a tradesman painting in his early days. He worked for Wylie Manufacturing in Petersburg until his retirement. In his work he took time to support and uplift those around him. Jay was a gentle spirit who cared for everyone around him. He loved dogs and would often feed the strays at Wylie. He was known as a jokester to his family members and enjoyed sharing stories of his adventures with his family members. He enjoyed listening to The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Jay was very creative and would make each of his family members and friends dragonflies out of fan blades and would paint them bright colors. He found beauty in everyday things. Jay was truly a one of a kind, good and generous individual. As his mother would say, “He was loved by those who knew him.”
Jay is preceded in death by his father, J.C. Thompson.
He is survived by his mother, Ruby Thompson of Petersburg; one brother, Mike and wife Terri of Kress; one sister, Sheri of Euless; one nephew, Jonathan and wife Monica Thompson of Plainview and their children, Emmeri Thompson and Ashton White of Lubbock; one niece Julie Thompson of Lubbock and a great group of many extended family members and friends.
