Jay E. Whitehead, Jr., was born on June 6, 1944 in Covington, Virginia. He passed away on July 5, 2024 after a very sudden decline in his health. He was only 80 years young.
Remembering and honoring Jay are his loving wife of 56 years, Patricia S. Whitehead, "Favorite" daughter Jennifer Dennis, "Favorite son in law" Raymond Dennis, three granddaughters, a son; Bryan Whitehead, his beloved dog; Buddy, a brother; Dennis Whitehead, his wife Debbie, and many extended family and friends. Jay was predeceased by his father Jay E. Whitehead, Sr., mother Ruby L. Whitehead, and brother Gary W. Whitehead.
Jay attended and graduated Covington High School, Covington, VA. It was here he found his love for music by singing in high school minstrels under the direction of Nell Fleshman. After high School, he served 5 years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt seeing the world. While serving his country, he continued his love of music by singing with the Blue Jacket Choir.
God called Jay to serve him through his talents of directing and singing at many local churches proclaiming God's will. The choir at Rosemont Christian Church was the most cherished with many years of service.
Although Jay held many jobs in the area, he was happiest when he could work, meet and talk with people such as in the 15 years he managed the gift shop at Sentara Leigh Hospital, and working as a concierge for Icon in Norfolk, VA.
His livelihood was singing with the Virginia Beach Chorale for 25 years. He loved laughing, joking, and going to the movies with friends and family. His smile was contagious and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family is inviting friends to celebrate Jay's life at 2pm, Monday, July 15, 2024 at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake with Pastor Jerry Kilyk officiating.
