Acclaimed concert flutist and longtime Gloucester resident, Jean Antrim, passed away on March 16, 2025 at the Hunt Rehab and Nursing facility in Danvers MA at the age of 89. She died of natural causes.
Born in Livingston NJ in 1935, Jean Antrim began playing the flute at the age of nine and by the time she was 13, was an active member of the New York – New Jersey roster of profession musicians and a member of the New York Local 802 Musicians union. She was a awarded a full scholarship by the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 14.
Jean enjoyed a successful career as a concert soloist and valued member of notable chamber and orchestral groups performing in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Center of Performing Arts and Broadway productions. She was the director of The Cathedral Arts Chamber Music Series in New York City, North Shore Lyric Flutes and was a founding member of the acclaimed Rameau Trio with which she recorded a series of baroque duos and trios with MMO records.
As the director of her own teaching studio, she developed legendary repute as a teacher of both the modern and baroque flute as well as offered comprehensive training in the playing of chamber music. Her students have occupied first chair positions in all-state orchestras and bands and many have become professionals in the field.
When not engaged in musical pursuits, Jean enjoyed spending time with her cats, dogs and Lipizzan horses. She was heavily involved in Dressage training as well as in the showing of her Afghan hounds.
Jean moved to Massachusetts in 1979 and married Edwin Erickson of Lanesville. The two enjoyed a marriage of 44 years. She is survived by husband Edwin, daughter Wendy Braunston, son Todd Antrim, son-in-law Robert Braunston and three grandchildren.

Jean and Edwin were our neighbors in Exeter, New Hampshire. We have good memories of the fun times together. After they moved to Massachusetts we still stayed in contact, had sporadic visits but mostly telephonic contact. We will miss Jean tremendously, never had a dull moment in her company. Rest in Peace dear friend. From: Salome & Peter

Jean and Edwin lived in the same apartment complex when we me them. Jean and I had fun making music together. I had my 1926 Chickering Concert grand and we had great fun making music. My husband Dennis made Edwin's days telling stories of his childhood in Iowa. We had several adventures of day trips with Jean and Edwin. I will miss her greatly and remember the good times.

For a while, I accompanied, on piano, several of Jean's flute students in ensemble. Each week when I arrived at her house on Holly Street in Gloucester, MA, I would be greeted by an incredible fragrance of dinner simmering in the kitchen. The combination of delicious aromas wafting downward to her studio while rehearsing pieces by Vivaldi, Chaminade, Moyse, et al, was an unforgettable experience. Even though "Miss Jean" was very exacting about what we needed to accomplish during rehearsal, she was incredibly patient with young students, who all seemed to love her. It was a privilege to work with and learn from her.
