Jean Pace Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 10, 2025.
Jean passed away peacefully Sunday morning at home surrounded by her family. She was born August 1, 1932 to Thomas Lee Mahanes and Mattie Detamore Mahanes. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine M. Shores (Roy) and a brother, David L. Mahanes (Marjorie).

Jean attended Meriwether Lewis School, Albemarle, County, Va and graduated from Meriwether Lewis High School in 1949. She then went to Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC. and graduated with a teaching degree. She returned to Charlottesville and began her

teaching career at Crozet Elementary School, Crozet, Va. She also taught at The Norfolk Christian Grammar School, Norfolk, Va and Fluvanna County at Cunningham District and Fork Union schools. Jean later served as a substitute teacher at Woodbrook Elementary

School in Albemarle County.

She met Walter A. Pace, Jr., "W.A.", and they were married June 18,1955 at Olivet Presbyterian Church, Garth Road, Charlottesville, Va. Jean was baptized and became an official member at Olivet in 1945 which made her the longest serving member of the congregation.

Jean is survived by her husband, W. A.; two sons, Tom (wife Judy) and Steve (wife Nicola); four grandchildren, Whitney Pace (husband Alex Soulas), Ryan Pace, Charlie Pace, and Liam Pace; great grandson Wesley James Soulas; a nephew, several cousins, and many

friends.

Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved her family and always found the time for them. She enjoyed reading, knitting and playing golf. She knitted hundreds of items but her favorites were prayer shawls and baby blankets, and she did this to almost the end of her life. She participated in numerous bible studies both here and in Florida when she and W. A. wintered in Florida. She enjoyed playing golf especially at Farmington Country Club and the Club at Glenmore.

Visitation will be at Hill and Wood Funeral Service in Charlottesville from 4:30 to 6:00 PM, Wednesday, November 12, 2025 with a service on Thursday at 2:00 PM at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2575 Garth Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22901 with burial in the church cemetery.

The family wants to thank Dr. Barbara Post for the many years of support to Jean. Also, they want to thank Sisters Who Care, LLC, and their devoted daily care team of Sarde, Nina and Rosa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2575 Garth Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.
