Jerilyn Eola Arnolia Carr, was born on August 12,1944, to Lester and Alice Arnolia in New Orleans Louisiana. She was the second oldest of five siblings. Jerilyn graduated from L.B. Landry High School Class of 1962. After high school she attended the University of New Orleans/LSU; she also attended Loyola University, where she developed an interest in real estate.
Jerilyn met the love of her life and future husband, Henry D. Carr at U.N.O. They married on January 21,1967, and remained so for fifty years. They had two wonderful children, Kimberly L. Carr and Henry Jonathan "Hank" Carr.
Jerilyn was a true trailblazer from the start! She had that go get it spirit. Anything she put her mind to she would go after it and get it, starting in the 60s when she was one of the first black cashiers at Krauss department store. She then started working at the post office before getting married and moving to Boston. After coming back to New Orleans, Jerilyn started her career as a real estate agent where she enjoyed fifteen profitable years with Carl Weber Realty. Upon moving to Houston in 1986, she joined U.S Housing and Urban development. Jerilyn flourished in this position; she retired as a property management specialist at grade 14.
Jerilyn's favorite things to do were shopping; she would shop all day if she could. Some people would call her Mrs. Beauty Queen. She loved watching basketball and going to Rockets and Comets games. Her favorite players were Magic Johnson and LeBron James. She also loved politics; if you got her started on this topic you would be talking for hours. Oh, and let us not forget she loved to bake. Everyone would ask her when are you going to make that German chocolate cake or that chocolate chip cake. But most importantly, she loved going to church and serving the Lord. She was a member of First Free Mission Baptist Church until moving to Houston where she joined Brentwood Baptist Church. She was part of the usher board and the greetings of new members.
Jerilyn is lovingly remembered by her daughter Kimberly Carr; grandchildren: Gianna Carr and Pejah Carr; two great grandchildren: Amare Carr and Kiara James; two sisters: Sharon James and Trudy Arnolia; and sisters-in-law: Janet Jourdan and Sheila Carr; daughter-in-law Adrian Carr. She was Auntie Jerry to Michael Arnolia (Doreen), Deborah Baxter, Krystal James-Conerly (Fred), and Bria Arnolia. She leaves behind so many other great- nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry David Carr; her son Henry Jonathan Carr; her sister Linda Holmes; brother Lester Keith Arnolia; and nephew Patrick James.
Countless family, friends and loved ones will sorely miss her lively energy.
The Homegoing Celebration will be on February 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Abundant Life Church, 9900 Hayne Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70127. The Interment will follow at McDonoghvillie Cemetery, 520 Hancock Street, Gretna, LA 70053.
