Jerry Leon Harkey, 74, of Mount Gilead, NC, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Born June 22, 1950, in Charlotte, NC, Jerry was the son of the late George Leon Harkey and Mary Sue Harkey Rowe.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Janis Harkey; sons Aaron Harkey (Heather), Daniel Harkey (Elizabeth), Jonathan Harkey (Bailey); daughter Shelly Snipes (Joel); brother Roy Rowe (Jan); sister Nancy Fortner (Dwight); sister Virginia Putnam (Alfred); grandchildren Blaine, Kolby, Levi, Lukas, Ivie, Owen, Brayden, Braxton, and Riley; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
A proud patriot, Jerry joined the Naval Reserves in November 1969 and served as an E3 Radioman aboard the USS Independence aircraft carrier. He was honorably discharged in November 1975. His experience as a radioman sparked a lifelong interest in ham radio.
After moving to Statesville, NC, Jerry began a long and dedicated career with EnergyUnited Electric Membership Corporation, retiring in 2015. Retirement brought the fulfillment of a dream for Jerry and Janis when they purchased a home on Lake Tillery, where he spent countless cherished moments with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Jerry loved watching them enjoy the water and took pride in captaining the family pontoon boat.
Jerry was an avid NASCAR fan, and often attended the annual Southern 500 race at Darlington Raceway with his brother-in-law, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also enjoyed cheering for the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Checkers. When not watching professional sports, Jerry was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren's activities, affectionately cheering on "Pete and Repeat."
Jerry had a deep love for music and was a proud left-handed guitarist. He delighted in playing classic rock favorites alongside his sons and son-in-law Joel. Known for his easy going demeanor, Jerry had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. He was often found smiling, humming a tune, and bringing joy to those around him.
Jerry was a loving patriarch and the anchor of his family. His sister Nancy fondly remembers him as the best big brother who taught her to skate and do the twist. This past Thanksgiving, Jerry gathered with his family at the lake and offered a heartfelt prayer, a moment we now treasure as our final family blessing together.
Although we are missing Jerry and the grandkids are missing their PawPaw, we are grateful for the countless cherished moments we shared. Whether it was time spent at the lake, cheering from the sidelines, or simply enjoying his music and laughter, Jerry's legacy of love, kindness, and contentment lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will continue to bring comfort and joy to all of us who loved him.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Tribute and Tallent Funeral and Cremations, 1937 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC 28205. Visitation from 2:00-3:00 pm followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm.

Jerry was a wonderful and enthusiastic member of the ProgDay Festival family of musical "kindred spirits" for many years and it was always a pleasure to celebrate the event with him every year in Chapel Hill. Jerry would make anyone an instant friend with his smile and infectious laugh. My lasting memory of him will be sharing a glass (well...two) of bourbon with him and his son, Aaron, on the Storybook field under a hot Labor Day weekend sun. We´ll all celebrate the music together again, one day. Until then, you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Jerry!

Jerry was an instant friend when we first met at one of our favorite gatherings every Labor Day. An events called Progday. The moment he would see me his face would light up, as would mine, and I´d be greeted by a handshake, a pat on the shoulder and a hug. I´ll miss you my brother.
