Dr. Jerry Kenneth O'Banion, age 86, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away, Friday, July 11, 2025, at the University of Missouri Hospital.

Jerry was born on September 17, 1938, in California, Mo., the son of Kenneth Jay and Louise Jane (Palmer) O'Banion. He was married on August 14, 1955, to Mary Lee Less who preceded him in passing in 2008. They were married for 53 years, during which they built a life filled with faith, family, and lasting memories. Jerry was united in marriage in Jefferson City, to Irma Marguerit "Midge" Hall who survives at the home.

After graduating from California High School in 1954, Jerry went on to attend Hannibal-LaGrange University, where he earned his degree. In 1963, he completed his medical education at the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, becoming a general surgeon. For many decades, Jerry dedicated his career to serving at Capital Region Medical Center-a place that held deep personal significance. His father, Kenneth, was one of the founding members of the hospital, and it was a profound honor for Jerry to follow in his footsteps and contribute to the institution his father helped establish.

When Jerry wasn't working at the hospital, he could often be found outdoors, especially on the John boat he built himself, fishing along the rivers. One of his most memorable adventures was traveling the entire length of the Missouri River, beginning at the fork in South Dakota. He also enjoyed canoeing with friends, hunting, hiking through the woods, and camping under the stars. Another of his passions was riding his Honda Goldwing motorcycle, embracing the open road with the same spirit of adventure he brought to every aspect of his life.

One of Jerry's greatest passions was both learning and teaching. He had an insatiable curiosity and was constantly exploring new ideas, often engaging in deep philosophical discussions. He genuinely wanted to understand everything about the world around him. This love of knowledge even led him to write a book, and at one point, he was working on a novel.

Above all, Jerry was most proud of his family. Jerry worked alongside his wife, Midge for over 30 years, sharing both a deep professional bond and, for the last 12 years, a devoted marriage. Their partnership was marked by mutual respect, unwavering support, and a love that enriched both their lives and the lives of those around them. He cherished watching his children grow and was deeply grateful for the close relationships he maintained with them into their adulthood. Always supportive, his patience and unwavering presence made him a steady and loving figure in his children's lives. Jerry leaves behind a life well lived, full of purpose, love, and learning. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Midge; children Jerri Webb (Kyle) of Camdenton, Mo., Gail O'Banion, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Patty McKnelly (Lorenzo) of Jefferson City, Mo; grandchildren Jerred Webb (Mandy), Martha Webb, Jennifer Hawley (Jake), Stephanie Reuhter (Jay), Heather McKnelly, Dow McKnelly, and Andrea Bell (Joe); seven great-grandchildren; and his son-in-law, Doug Fuller.

He is preceded in passing by his wife, Mary Lee; sister, Sandra O'Banion; daughter, Janey Fuller; and his grandson, Kenneth Webb.

A private celebration of life will be held for the family at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Special Learning Center, 1115 Fairgrounds Rd., Jefferson City, Mo., 65109.

I knew and worked with Dr. O'Banion in Surgery at Still Hospital in the '80s. He was a truly nice man who always had a smile. His skills as a surgeon served me well also in my time of need. I had the greatest respect for him the world will never be the same without him.
