It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jessica Leigh Bartkowiak, 38, on May 16, 2025, after a long and tireless battle with addiction.
Jessica was born on May 5, 1987, in South Bend, IN, to Mike Bartkowiak and Dawn (Newman) Smeltzer.
Though she faced difficult struggles in her life, Jessica's so much more than her addiction. She was a mother, daughter, sister, friend, and a person full of dreams, humor, and heart. Her life reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and the urgent need to support those fighting battles we may not fully understand.
She was a unique soul with many talents. Jessica had a creative spark that showed up in countless ways-whether she was experimenting in the kitchen, helping her daughters dream up a whacky new hairstyle, or turning a simple doodle into an unexpected masterpiece. She also found joy and peace in gardening, with a special talent for bringing life and color to whatever she touched, whether it was a flower bed or growing her own food. Her garden was a reflection of her- colorful, stubborn, and full of character.
She had a sharp wit and a way with words that could catch anyone off guard-her quick comments and ability to command a room were unforgettable to those who knew and loved her. Jessica had a deep love for music of all kinds and shared a passion for pop culture and movies, always ready with a quote or a song lyric that fit the moment.
She is survived by her 5 beautiful children; Lilyan Siford, Dahlia Collins, Iris Aguilera, Riot Aguilera, and Magnolia Galindo; Mother, Dawn (Newman) Smeltzer; Father, Mike Bartkowiak and his life partner Jennifer Buras; Sisters, Aubrianna Singh, Myranda Schumaker; Stepfather; Mark Smeltzer; Paternal Grandparents, Mike (Mary) Bartkowiak, Cindy Grounds; And Many other Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.
She was predeceased by Maternal Grandparents, Richard Newman and Sandra Newman.
A Celebration of Life
Family and friends, please join us as we come together for a short memorial service to remember and honor the life of Jessica Leigh Bartkowiak beginning at 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the Izaak Walton League, 20400 Darden Road, South Bend, Indiana 46637. A light luncheon and refreshments will be served.
