Joan Maxine Cassel passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, in Niles, MI, at the age of 85. Born on July 3, 1940, in Berrien Springs, MI, Joan was the cherished daughter of the late Aaron and Addie (Noe) Anderson. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness, the warmth of family, and the joy of simple pleasures.
Joan's journey through life was marked by an unwavering devotion to her family. She was the beloved wife of Carlis Cassel, with whom she built a life filled with love and mutual respect. Together, they raised two daughters, Sharon (Dan) Sievers and Jill (Scott) Kovatch, who were the light of Joan's life. Her role as a mother was one she treasured deeply, and she instilled in her children the values of compassion, gratitude, and resilience.
The family tree Joan nurtured continued to flourish with the addition of her adoring grandchildren, Max (Abby), Jake, Jenna, Evan (Mary Claire), Allison, Michele (John), Teresa, and James. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them. The joy of family grew even more with her great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Gemma, Isaac, Elizabeth, Eleanor, and George, who brought her immeasurable happiness. Joan was preceded in death by her sister, Buelah, and her brother, Aaron. She is survived by her brother, Jim, who, along with the rest of the family, will miss her deeply but will continue to be inspired by her legacy.
A homemaker in the truest sense, Joan created a warm and inviting home where laughter was abundant, and everyone was welcome. Her turkey stuffing was legendary, and her Thanksgiving gatherings were a cherished tradition that will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to partake.
Joan's love for life extended beyond her home. She saw beauty in everything and had a passion for traveling, exploring new places, and creating memories. Spending time on the lake was one of her favorite pastimes, where she found peace and joy in the serenity of nature. Volunteering was second nature to Joan, as she generously gave her time and energy to various causes, touching many lives with her kindness. Her love for her community was evident in everything she did.
Above all, Joan's role as a wife, mom, grandma and great-grandmother was what she cherished most. The love she shared with her family was her greatest accomplishment, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever. She went home to be with her Savior and will be greatly missed.
