Jimmie Mae Carpenter

Jimmie Mae Carpenter departed this life on August 21, 2025, in Blue Springs, Missouri, at the age of 87. Born on September 28, 1937, in England, Arkansas, Jimmie's life story is one woven with love and adventure, capturing the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.

Jimmie’s early years were forged during the tumultuous times of the Great Depression and just before the dawn of World War II. Her childhood was characterized by frequent relocations, as she navigated through various schools, never settling for more than two years in any one place. This transient beginning, however, instilled in her a resilience that would define her later endeavors. On August 2, 1958, Jimmie married the love of her life, Lewis Carpenter, in a ceremony at the Stone Church, where they would remain lifelong members. Together they created a loving home filled with laughter, adventure, and cherished memories. As their children grew, Jimmie and Lewis embraced their love for travel, embarking on extensive road trips that allowed them to explore all 50 states while camping along the way. In the later chapters of their lives, Jimmie and Lewis became true globe-trotters, gracing five out of seven continents with their presence.

Academically inclined, Jimmie began her higher education journey at William Jewell College and finished at Central Missouri State University (now University of Central Missouri), where she earned her master’s degree. She found her calling as a physical education teacher, dedicating a significant part of her career to nurturing the minds and bodies of students at Grandview East Junior High School, instilling in them the values of teamwork, health, and the joy of physical activity.

Beyond her professional and travel endeavors, Jimmie held a deep passion for reading and quilting, skills honed under the patient guidance of her dear friend Cathy, who often accompanied her on camping trips. Additionally, her enthusiasm for sports was infectious; she cheered fervently for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and competition. In her later years, she discovered a love for pickleball, engaging in spirited matches and teaching the game to others. Jimmie Mae Carpenter's legacy is one of profound connection—connections forged through her teachings, her travels, the quilts that wrapped loved ones in warmth, and the laughter shared with the ones she loved.

Jimmie's passing is preceded by her parents, Leon and Irma Willis; her twin, Johnnie Willis and her brother, Freddie Willis; her beloved husband, Lewis Carpenter; and her dear friend, Cathy Bergman. Her legacy of love lives on through her sons, Doug Carpenter (Cheryl) and Jay Carpenter (Lisa); her grandchildren, Steven Carpenter (Amber), Sarah Willig (David), and Annabelle Carpenter, as well as one great-grandchild, Quinn Willig. She is also survived by her dear friend and chosen sister, Patricia Dunn.

Jimmie's family invites friends and community members to honor her life at the Community of Christ Stone Church in Independence, Missouri. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM and ending in a graveside service at Andover Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
