Elizabeth "Liz" Short (née Haley), a devoted educator and civic leader, passed away on August 15, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri. She was 95 years old.

Born on July 10, 1930, in Kirkwood, Missouri, Elizabeth graduated from Kirkwood High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with majors in art and English from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO). She later completed graduate coursework at SEMO and Central Missouri State University. In recognition of her civic contributions, she received the Alumni Merit Award Citation from SEMO.

Elizabeth began her teaching career at Sikeston High School in Missouri, where she taught English and art. Later, she continued her commitment to education by teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants and refugees.

From 1990 to 1997, Elizabeth served as mayor of North Kansas City, Missouri, initially completing the unexpired term of her late husband, Kelsey Short, Sr. During her tenure, she founded the North Kansas City Business Council and led initiatives that emphasized community engagement. She was active in numerous civic organizations including the PTA, American Association of University Women, Mid-America Regional Council, Missouri Municipal League, Clay County Fine Arts Council, and the Kansas City Symphony Guild. She played a leadership role in North Kansas City's Golden and Centennial Anniversary celebrations. She received multiple awards for her service to the community and various organizations.

Elizabeth is remembered by her children: Kelsey Short, Jr. (Amanda Short), Amy Short (Steve Penick), and Sterling Short; her granddaughters Haley, Arden, Kaitlin, and Eryn; five nieces; and many friends whose lives were enriched by her presence.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kelsey Short Sr., her mother Julia Florence Haley, and her brother Wilbur Haley.

A private celebration of Elizabeth's life was held.

Creative, community-minded, fun-loving, and ahead of her time-Elizabeth "Liz" Short leaves behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and connection. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
