Suzanne Short Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Aug. 28, 2025.

A woman whose warmth, positivity, and joy touched everyone she met.

Suzanne Richey Short, 76, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025 after a courageous battle with dementia.

She was born on February 24, 1949, the oldest child of Benjamin "Gene" and Rena Richey.

Suzanne is survived by her son, Travis (Carol Ann) Short and family; her brothers, Larry Richey and Jeff Richey; sister, Beth (Gary) Richey White Phelps; along with many nieces, and nephews whom she dearly loved; and special best friends, Susan Short, and Kathy Earl.

Suzanne was a hard-working single mother most of her life. She excelled in many careers while providing for the apple of her eye, Travis Joe. Travis and Suzanne had a very special bond. Suzanne wasn't just Travis's mother, she was his friend, his defender, and his biggest supporter. Most importantly, she was the best mother in the world to Travis.

Suzanne had a gift for turning acquaintances into friends within minutes and her warmth made everyone feel instantly at ease. She was positive, upbeat, and always fun to be around. Fiercely devoted to her family, Suzanne never missed a holiday gathering. She faithfully remembered birthdays and anniversaries, buying cards for everyone she cared about. She enjoyed going to dinner monthly with her large group of "gal pals." Suzanne was a loyal friend, known for her generosity, encouragement, and steady presence.

After graduating from Marion High School in 1967, Suzanne began her career at Rexall Drugs in Marion. She later worked as a sales clerk at Odum's Jewelry, followed by Delmar Studios as a photographer and eventually joined Banterra Bank where she remained until her retirement in 2015. Throughout her career, many of her co-workers became like family to her and she treasured those lasting relationships.

Suzanne loved traveling, especially to the beach, photography, gardening, bowling, music, dancing, and shopping for shoes. Her home was always immaculate, inviting, reflecting her care and pride in her surroundings. Even in retirement she stayed active, competing in many 5k walks and often winning in her age category. She loved the challenge and joy of participating, a reflection of her positive and active spirit.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Rena Richey; grandparents, Benjamin Franklin and Della (Kennedy) Richey and Omer and Stella (Bearden) Tanner.

A special thank you to her caregivers, Beverly, Michelle, and Peggy.
