Jimmie Howell of
Dimmitt, Texas passed peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2025, in Amarillo,
Texas at the age of 90 years.
Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at the First
Baptist Church of Dimmitt with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan and Rev. Paul Kenley officiating. Burial
will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the care of Colonial Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. at the
funeral home.
Jimmie Howell was born in his current house at "The Tree" in the Bethel Community on August
20, 1934, in
Dimmitt, Texas to Moss and Hattie (Bagwell) Howell. The house was moved to the
county road, where Jimmie and Sue raised their family and built a life filled with love, laughter,
and lasting memories. The door was always open, the bear hugs and firm handshakes were
guaranteed, and the table always had room for one more. He took great pride in the Howell
family name, honoring his parents not only by tending to the land they cherished, but also by
keeping the strong family bonds that held everyone together. Jimmie embraced his role as
husband, father and grandfather finding pride and joy in watching his family grow and thrive.
He delighted in sharing stories, wisdom and laughter and celebrated successes with a quiet pride
and unwavering support.
Jimmie had been a lifelong resident of
Dimmitt, Texas and the Bethel Community. He graduated
from Dimmitt High School and immediately began farming with his family. He married Sue
(Ward) Howell on June 2, 1962, in Amarillo at the San Jacinto Baptist Church and were married
for 62 years. Although farming was his life, Jimmie served as Castro County Commissioner for
2 terms while also serving on the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery board, Co-op gin board
and the Farm Bureau board. He also coached little league baseball and refereed football games
for several years. He spent many years supporting young people through the Young Farmers
Association, FFA, and 4-H. Jimmie was a member of the First Baptist Church.
On November 3, 2016, the Howell Family was honored with the Family Land Heritage Program
Award which honors families who have owned and run a continuous agricultural operation for
100 years or more.
Jimmie is survived by his wife, Sue Howell of
Dimmitt, TX, son, Kennen Howell and wife
Jennifer of Boerne, TX, daughter, Kim Broom of Amarillo, TX, son, Kelly Howell and wife
Cathy of New Braunfels, TX, 3 brothers, Jack Howell and wife Charlene of
Dimmitt, TX, Oran
Howell and wife Barbara of Corsicana, TX, and John Howell and wife Colleen of Texline, TX, sister, Gayle Stovall and husband Melvin of Fritch, TX, 7 grandchildren, Paige Howell, Macy
Reed and husband Ryan, Zoe Howell, Dustin Burnam and wife Nikki, Kaymee Hunt and
husband Michael, Kauner Howell, and Koda Howell along with 1 great-grandchild, Wilder
Burnam, 28 loved nieces, nephews and families.
Jimmie is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Charles Henry Howell and Herbert
Howell and 3 sisters, Patricia Sue Enloe, Karen Ahlerich and Linda Bethea. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests memorials to West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, c/o Steve Buckley, 1607 W. Bedford St.,
Dimmitt, Texas 79027.
