SAINT ALBANS - Joan E. Cheeseman, age 78, passed away on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025, at the Northwestern Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on February 4th, 1947, in Richford VT, to the late Robert and Florence (Wright) Cheeseman.
A proud graduate of the University of Vermont, Joan earned her master's degree in health and dedicated herself to the field of nursing. For many years, she served as a dedicated nurse at Richford Elementary school and Richford Highschool for 15 years, Montgomery Elementary school, Berkshire Elementary school, and the Enosburgh Highschool, where her compassion and care made a profound impact on the lives of countless students. Joan's nurturing approach and genuine concern for their well-being resonated deeply with the children, earning her a special place in their hearts. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joan was actively involved in her community, particularly at the Richford County Club, where she played a pivotal role in organizing tournaments and managing clubhouse activities. Her vibrant spirit and passion for bringing people together enriched the lives of those around her.
Joan's greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them, imparting wisdom, love, and laughter in equal measure. Joan's devotion to her loved ones will forever be remembered and celebrated.
The Cheeseman family extends their heartfelt gratitude to friends and community members for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. A special thank you is extended to David and Donna Bordo for their unwavering assistance and kindness.
Joan is survived by her children, Tony Martel, and Christina Martel; grandchildren, Michael Martel and his wife Adelia, Nicholas, Bailey and Riley; great-grandchild, Hazel. In addition to her parents, Joan was pre-deceased by her siblings, John Cheeseman, and her infant brother Timothy.
In respecting Joan's wishes, the family will hold a private graveside at a later date.
