Joan (Matthews) Ice, 99, of Mt Summit, passed away on the afternoon of Friday, May 30, 2025.
She was born on June 21, 1925 in Axminster, Devon, England, a daughter of the late Richard and Blanche Matthews.
Joan worked at a carpet factory and during WWII she transitioned into nursing. She met her husband, Richard Ice, in the town of Axminster at a dance while she was serving as a nurse and he was stationed with the Army. They were later engaged on April 20, 1946 and married November 12, 1946 in Gettysburg, PA after the war.
Joan helped with the family farm and raised chickens to sell eggs to be able to travel back to England for visits. She also worked as a teachers aid at Blue River Elementary. She was passionate about the Royal family and collected bone china from coronations and births. Joan was an original member of the Tea Pot Club and also member of two bridge clubs. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, baking wonderful pies, travelling through Europe, Middle East, South America, Caribbean and spending time at the family cottage on Walloon Lake in Michigan. Joan had a sweet spirit and always showed kindness and love.
Those left to cherish her memory include children, Joe (Betty) Ice and Jill (David) Cook; son-in-law, Charles (Peg) Bell; grandchildren, Angela (Aaron) Miller, Matt (Danielle) Bell, Kelsea (Dean) Behrendsen, Jordan (Alexis) Ice and Christopher Ice-Cook; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Kolby, Marc, Christian, Collin, Lola, Mira, and Luka; nieces, Susan Matthews, and Deby Armstrong and a nephew, Scott Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ice; a daughter, Jennifer Lou Bell; a brother, Derek Matthews; nephews, Richard Matthews and Trammel Smith and a great-grandson, Malaki Ice.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to Senior Living at Forest Ridge Activity Department with envelopes available at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, June 6, 2025 at Sproles Family Funeral Home in New Castle. A private graveside service will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 – 1 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.

I worked with Joan at the old BRV elementary school. She was a delight! I can still hear the sound of her shoes click click down the hall. And her love of hot tea even in the summer. She will be missed. Kris Bitner
