OBITUARY
Joanna Lee Shere, 87 of Malvern, IA, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.
Joanna was born on December 17, 1936 in Council Bluffs, the daughter of Clifford Lawrence and Edythe Kathryn (Hall) Mackey. She grew up and lived all her life in Malvern where she attended school and graduated from the Malvern High School in 1954. Joanna worked at a drug store in Glenwood, IA and at the ASC office in Malvern.
Joanna and Richard Leroy Shere were married on June 26, 1955 at the Christian Church in Glenwood. They made their home in Malvern and were blessed with three children, Kari Susan, Mark Edward, and Douglas Richard.
Joanna was a busy homemaker and mother. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Order of Rainbow for Girls, and Order of Eastern Star. Joanna was superb at handwork and sewing, having made numerous alterations, repairs, outfits, and hand-stitched names on memorial flags, through the years. Joanna enjoyed baking, reading, and working search-a-word and crossword puzzles. Her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Joanna and Richard were married 56 years when Richard passed away on November 17, 2011. Joanna continued to live in their home and was there for her children whenever a sitter was needed.
In addition to her husband, Joanna was preceded in death by her parents; maternal grandparents, Carl Hall and Anna Hall Bacon; paternal grandparents, Charles and Lily Mackey; several aunts and uncles; and by special cousin Nancy Hall McGee.
Joanna is survived by her daughter, Kari Abel and husband Tom of Omaha, NE; sons, Mark Shere and wife Pamela of Colgate, WI, and Doug Shere and wife Christina of Malvern; eight grandchildren, Ben Shere and wife Donna, Nikolai Shere and wife Rachel, Ashley Koraleski and husband Josh, Kristy Abel, Katelyn Shere and fiance Jacob Hahlbeck, Clayton Shere, Jordyn Shere and special friend Rick Petree, and Mackynzie Shere; great grandchildren, Brody Shere, Cooper Shere, twins, Trey and Trent Abel-Holl, Axel Koraleski, and Penelope Petree; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

Joanna, my friend forever. She welcomed me into her world in 1943 and we have been in touch for these years. Joanna was a sweet and kind soul; always putting the needs of others first. She was a walking book of remembrances when everyone else failed. Organization was another one of her traits. Our class had many reunions and Joanna was always at the helm of them all. I will miss her. Fly high with the angels, sweet lady!
