Joaquim Fernandes Monteiro, 80, of Wallingford, CT, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, after a courageous 16-year battle with prostate cancer.
Born on July 22,1945, in Sanjurge, Chaves, Portugal, to the late Domingos Monteiro and Germana Fernandes, Joaquim was known throughout his life for his physical strength, quiet determination, honesty, integrity, and devotion to his family. A devoted husband and family man, he served his country as the Cabo de Escriturário during the Guinea-Bissau War in the 1960s and 1970s. He later served in the Guarda Fiscal (Portuguese Customs and Border Guard) on border control. He emigrated to Luxembourg in the 1970s, where he learned his trade that would eventually become his life's work as a master stone mason. He built his first home in Portugal with his beloved wife of 52 years, Maria Alzira Morais da Cruz Monteiro.
A skilled stone mason, Joaquim learned his trade in Luxembourg before immigrating to Bridgeport in 1980. Eventually settling in Wallingford, where he lived for over 40 years, Joaquim's heart always belonged to Portugal. Every summer, he brought his children back to his hometown so they could spend time with family, walk the same streets, speak the language, and experience the traditions he held dear. It was his heartfelt wish that they would always cherish that connection, never forgetting where they came from, and carry the love for Portugal in their hearts as he did.
From his skilled hands, Joaquim took great pride in building stone patios, fireplaces, retaining walls, and other works of masonry that can be found throughout New Haven and Fairfield counties. A perfectionist and passionate craftsman, he approached every project with care and dedication. Most notably, the Padre Pio Chapel he built at St. Monica Church, in Northford, stands as a testimony to both his artistry and deep religious faith.
Joaquim also poured the same passion and pride into building and creating in other areas of his life-whether through gardening, winemaking, or grilling sardines for his family. An avid soccer fan, he loved supporting the Portuguese National Team and watching Portuguese league games. He especially cherished trips to the beach and taking his grandson Thomas to pick pears and apples at Lyman Orchards.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Alzira Morais da Cruz Monteiro; by his children: Antonio Jose da Cruz Monteiro (his wife, Dr. Kirsten Block), Luisa Maria da Cruz Monteiro (longtime boyfriend Gabriel Serrano), Dr. Carla Maria da Cruz Monteiro, and Marcia Cristina da Cruz Monteiro Rodrigues (her husband, Dr. Brian Rodrigues); and by his grandson, Thomas Alexander Rodrigues. He also leaves behind his siblings, Maria Helena Fernandes Monteiro, Jose Manuel Fernandes Monteiro, Maria do Carmo Fernandes Monteiro, Antonio Fernandes Monteiro, Candido Garcia Monteiro, and Maria Alice Fernandes Monteiro, along with their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Daisy.
Calling hours will be held at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford at 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held in Portugal later this month with burial at the Cemitério de Sanjurge, Chaves, at the wishes of Joaquim.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to a charity of your choice in Joaquim's memory. Online condolences may be made at www.
