After Terrence died me and all the Woodward students set up a small memorial around the corner from where he was killed. Shortly after someone came by and destroyed the whole memorial.
I went out after that school day and began picking up some of the mess. Out of nowhere Wak and his friend Daleon jumped out of a car and started helping me and asked their ride to leave as we cleaned up what was left of the mess.
This was the first day I got a feel for Wak and what his character really was. Funny enough someone from the tackle program came by randomly blessed us with 2 full bags of chipotle. We shared that meal on the corner and talked about life for a good hour before we went on with our day.
I´m gonna miss this kid so much. I´m gonna miss him coming to my room just to talk abt Dave´s hot chicken and babytron being better than Herbo. I´m gonna miss you being one of those few students to check in on me after we take a crazy loss. Ipy mann im going to miss it all. The light you were will forever be missed and remembered.

As a teacher, this is one of the few things they can't teach you about in college and that one is never ready for. Joaquin was in my class and was one of the really great kids. He was always respectful and came to class with a smile, even when he was still waking up. He was focused on graduating and getting his brand started. He was always talking about sports and fashion in class. Joaquin's passing hurts and he is greatly missed.

One of my duties at WHS this year was scanning student IDs so they could go into the cafeteria for lunch. Joaquin's lunch period is the first lunch and there are a lot of students in there. Each day I would see him and his big hair coming down they hall to scan in. He always had a goofy smile and a funny word to say. I noticed that he definitely had an eye for fashion and that entrepreneurial spirit. He was never rude and he always said hello when he presented his student ID. He would be surrounded by friends, who were joking or laughing right along with him.

Though I did not know Joaquin personally, seeing him everyday for lunch, I could tell he was a normal kid just trying to live his life the best he could. When the staff learned of his passing, there was a sad spirit that hovered over the school. It lasted for several days and I know that I comforted more than one student who just needed a hug or a kind word.

To Joaquin's mom: you did an amazing job raising a fine young man. I am truly sorry for your loss. I have two sons and I pray they have the same outgoing, fun, and respectful personality that your son showed every day he saw me. He is safe now, and you will find Joaquin in God's hands. Pray for courage and strength to get through this most challenging of times.

I was grateful that Casandra Salas, one of the many staff members at Woodward that loved Joaquin, shared his obituary with the entire staff. When this tragedy occurred and afterwards, I can attest that there was a deep sorrow that filled the school for many days. It was nearly silent and lifeless as those that attended were in shock and disbelief; weeping and heartbroken, and wishing Joaquin was still with them . I am a teacher at Woodward, but I didn't know Joaquin except for seeing him and his big, beautiful hair walking down the hallway. I remember saying to him often, "I love your hair! It's gorgeous!" He would flash me a genuine smile and say, "Thank you." Then one time I couldn't resist and I asked him if I could touch it and without even really knowing me, he obliged. The obituary was beautiful and it helped me get a better idea of the wonderful character qualities this young man had. I could also feel the incredible love that he gave to others and that others had for him. Though we have one less kind and loving person in this world, the world gained much more because of the impact Joaquin had on so many. Though his loved ones will deeply miss him and feel the pain and sorrow of his absence, he is with his Lord and Savior now waiting for the day when he will see them again. God rest his precious soul and give strength, comfort, and peace to those that knew him and loved him.

With faith, hope, and love,

Mrs. Murray
