Joel Christoper Shapiro, cherished son, sibling, uncle, and friend, passed away on October 5th 2025 in Aurora, Colorado at the age of 42.
Joel was born on April 30th, 1983 in Binghamton, New York. During his family's many relocations, Joel made friends quickly in every new place. He was intelligent, outgoing, and carried a sharp wit and easy charm that always made the people around him feel at ease.
As a young man, Joel displayed a wide range of interests and talents including skateboarding, hiking, baseball, and showed a rich artistic side. He demonstrated enormous talent and skill in music, picking up guitar, piano, drums, bass, and mandolin. He fostered his musical abilities throughout his life, writing instrumentals and songs, and performing in various bands and as a DJ in clubs in and around Atlanta.
After high school, Joel showed particular aptitude for vehicle repair and enhancements. He was always improving various vehicles, repairing body work, and installing a wide range of performance equipment into every car he could get his hands on.
At the age of 22, Joel enlisted in the Army. Joel served faithfully from November 2005 until to October 2010, during which he completed two deployments to Iraq. He worked in the armory and motor pool, repairing heavy equipment and clearing IED. During this time, he achieved the rank of sergeant and earned an Army Commendation Medal.
After his service, Joel attended Georgia State University and graduated in 2019 with an Associates degree. During this time, Joel applied his mechanical skills installing state-of-the-art equipment into life-saving emergency vehicles.
Joel loved travelling and took every opportunity to explore the world. His travels took him across the country and throughout North America. In every trip, he would eagerly seek new experiences and engage with new people. He dearly loved to make new friends in every place and situation.
After buying a house in Cumming, Georgia, Joel found a deep love for Lake Lanier and would spend every opportunity to bring his jet ski to the lake and skim across the water.
Joel was always deeply devoted to his family. At every major family event, Joel was eager to help in any way he could. After his father passed, Joel took care of his mother and sister for over a year while they found their feet again. At every family gathering, Joel had an easy manner that made everyone feel important. He always listened, always engaged, and always cared.
As an uncle, Joel was irreplaceable. He lit up with joy every time he saw his nephews or nieces. He was never too busy to spend time with them, read with them, chase them or tackle them, or just let his dogs loose on them. His affection was as contagious as his smile. He was dearly admired by every nephew and dearly loved by every niece.
Joel leaves behind his beloved partner Sapna, with whom he spent some of the best years of his life. They loved to travel across the western United States together, sharing many adventures. He had a special bond with Sapna's children, Sophie and James, who adored him deeply. They will miss his kindness, playfulness and the way he made them feel loved.
Joel was preceded in death by his father, Robert Shaprio, whose memory he honored throughout his life. He is survived by his mother, Patricia, his siblings, Abigail, Matthias (Bethany), Anna Yonkofski (Rick), John (Elizabeth), and Nathaniel (Valhalla), his adored nephews and nieces, Abigail, Lillie, Rachel, RJ, Katy, Alexander, William, Jacob, Daniel, Evey, and Malcolm, his partner Sapna and her two children Sophie and James
