Kaplan, LA - A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Reverend Suresh Mathangi will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of John Ovelton "Bub" Abshire, 91, who passed away on August 31, 2025, at his residence. He will be laid to rest at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Arnold Abshire, Tannon Trahan, Adam Abshire, Patrick Abshire, Henry Rudd III, and Adrian Carlin III. Honorary pallbearers will be Morgan Abshire, Drake Carlin, Grant Trahan, and Kylan Trahan.
A visitation will take place at Vincent Funeral Home of Kaplan on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM. The visitation will continue Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 8:00 AM until the procession departs for the church at 11:00 AM.
"Bub" spent his life dedicated to the land he loved as a hardworking farmer, expertly cultivating rice, cattle, and crawfish. He also worked as an carpenter for over 40 years. He served on the Isle Marrone Gravity Drainage No.1 Board of Commissioners for over 40 years. "Bub" enjoyed hunting, gardening, and he was also known for his love of playing Wahoo, sharing laughter and stories around the game board with friends and family.
He is survived by his four sons, Carl Abshire and his wife Carlos, Patrick Abshire, Roderick Abshire, and Arnold Abshire; two daughters, Cynthia A. Trahan and Lisa A. Stelly and her husband Raywood; eleven grandchildren, Mandy Trahan, Tiffany T. Broussard, Tannon Trahan, Morgan Abshire, Angelique A. Boudreaux, Adam Abshire, Tonya Stelly, Fallon Stelly, Bailey Kidder, Aubrey Abshire, and Austin Abshire; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, May Rose Abshire; father, Eudor Abshire; mother, Leona Hollier; four sisters, Eula (Danry) Guidry, Pearly (Dudley) Lege, Velma (Oris) Trahan, and Beverly (Russel) Hebert; three grandchildren, Lerrin Abshire, Jennifer Abshire, and April Abshire; and three great-grandchildren.
