John Bieren, Jr., age 89, a longtime resident of Westford, passed away peacefully at Edith Nourse Rogers Veterans Hospital on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Mitchell) Bieren with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage.
He was born in Arlington on July 10, 1936, and was the son of the late John Bieren, Sr. and Ianthe (Proverbs) Bieren.
John was raised in Lexington, graduating from Lexington High School in 1954. He attended Northeastern University, majoring in electrical engineering before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1958. While stationed at Miramar Airfield in California, he served in the Pacific fleet aboard the Kittyhawk, the Oriskany, and the Hancock aircraft carriers as an F8U-1P Crusader reconnaissance photo pilot for VFP-63. As a lieutenant he was honorably discharged in late December 1963, completing his reserve service in July 1964. His love of flying and ability to identify almost any plane never left him. If there was an airshow in New England (especially featuring the Blue Angels) it would become a cherished time with family and friends.
John was employed as construction supervisor for Deck House Inc. and then as yard foremen at Rex Lumber Company in Acton, MA prior to his retirement.
John was a member of the Carlisle Congregational Church for many years and served in various capacities including trustee, youth leader, greeter, and usher.
He treasured time with family at home or in Canada at their lakefront cottage. He loved to share many of the things he enjoyed and found the opportunity to do that not only with family, but also with the senior and junior high youth groups and the Boys Battalion Chapter he led at church. Many young people learned how to water ski behind John's boat with his excellent coaching.
August was usually chosen as the time when he and others made plans to bring men and boys of the church for a camping trip in Maine to climb Mt. Katahdin. In the winter months he enjoyed snowmobiling in New Hampshire and Maine.
John loved trains and from the time he was a young boy he added to his collection of Lionel trains. He spent many hours in his train room working on the layout and scenery. When the grandchildren were young, one of the first things they requested was for Grampy to show them his trains (as did many adults).
In addition to his loving wife Barbara, John is survived by his sons John and his companion Donna Jones of Nashua, NH, James and his wife Cheryl of Groton, MA and Jeffrey and his wife Tammy of Litchfield, NH, along with his grandsons John and Jarret, and granddaughters Nicole, Kiersten Lewin, Laura, Noelle and Taylor Bieren. He was also blessed with 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to the Carlisle Congregational Church, 147 School St., Carlisle, MA 01741 or to Hope International, 227 Granite Run Dr., Suite 250, Lancaster, PA 17601.
