John David Cooke, age 78, entered the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 13, 2026 at the Kobacker House.
On March 24, 1947 John was born in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The son of the late Joseph T. and Lillian Josephine (Tjarks) Cooke. John attended Marion Harding High School and graduated with the class of 1964. In 1965, John married his soulmate, Clara E. (Smith) Cooke at Epworth United Methodist Church in Marion. The loving couple shared over 62 marvelous years together.
When John turned nineteen, he started to work for General Telephone Co. During his working career, John had the opportunity to work on the first computer that General Telephone Co. had in
Marion, Ohio. John continued to climb the ladder at work and became Manager of Data Services. John served over 34 years before retiring.
John lived his life with energy, loyalty, and a competitive spirit that never faded. An athlete at heart, John loved the thrill of the game, the challenge of competition, and the camaraderie that came with it. Whether on the golf course, the softball field, basketball court or the bowling lanes, he gave his all and he did it with heart.
An avid golfer, John found joy and peace on the greens at Whetstone Country Club and Kings Mill Golf Course. Some of his most cherished memories were made playing in a golf league alongside his son; time spent not just chasing birdies, but sharing laughter, stories, and a bond that only grew stronger with each round.
John's competitive spirit extended far beyond golf. He was an outstanding softball player and a proud coach of the team "Popped Right," leading them to an impressive 7th place finish in the state. His leadership inspired those around him, teaching teammates not only how to compete, but how to believe in themselves. He also enjoyed bowling and basketball, always ready for a little friendly competition.
For over 40 years, John was a Marquis Member of the Marion Palace Theatre. He had a special front-row seat that everyone knew belonged to him. A place where he applauded his family's performances, supported the arts, and became a familiar and beloved presence in the community.
John's generosity and compassion were especially evident in his love for animals. He was a dedicated supporter of the Marion Area Humane Society, always willing to give to a cause that spoke to his heart.
While working in Florida, John discovered another love, the beach. He found peace walking the shores of St. Pete Beach and Holmes Beach, embracing the sunshine, the sound of the waves, and the simple beauty of the ocean.
A loyal sports fan, John passionately cheered for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Game days were serious business, and his enthusiasm was contagious.
Above all, John will be remembered for his competitive fire, his generous heart, and his unwavering dedication to the things and people he loved. Whether you met him on the field, at the theatre, on the beach, or in the stands cheering on his teams, you knew you were in the presence of someone who lived fully and passionately.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Clare E. Cooke; children: David (Kimberly) Cooke and Kristi (Joseph) Wink; grandchildren: Matthew, Casey, Sadie, Tanner, and Brady; siblings: Robert (Mary Ann Panzeca) Cooke and Joan Cooke; and nephews: Michael Cooke, Jeffrey (Libby), and Eddie Velasquez.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas (Nancy)Cooke; sister Mary Jane Lodge; aunt Barbara Llewellyn; and uncle Henry Jarks.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to the Marion Area Humane Society and/or the Marion Palace Theatre.
