John Bacon Curtis, a beloved educator and devoted pastor, passed away on August 23, 2025, at the Timbercrest Healthcare Center in North Manchester. Born on December 11, 1943, to Theodore Roosevelt and Meta (Bacon) Curtis, in Racine, Wisconsin, John’s journey through life was characterized by his deep commitment to faith, family, and community service.
In pursuit of his academic goals, John graduated from Horlick High School in 1963 and furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, where he earned his degree in Education. Driven by his faith, he pursued additional studies and obtained his Masters of Divinity degree from the University of Dubuque, Iowa. His educational endeavors reflected his commitment not only to personal growth but also to the spiritual development of others.
John began his professional career as a high school history teacher at Case High School in Racine, where he nurtured young minds for ten years. His passion for education and an undeniable calling to serve the Lord led him to transition into a deeply fulfilling role as a pastor. For thirty years, he dedicated his life to preaching and supporting his congregations. He served at the Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester from 1977 to 1996 and continued his pastoral journey at the Plymouth Congregational Christian Church in Plainfield, Illinois, from 1996 to 2006. Throughout his pastoral career, John was instrumental in guiding many to embrace the Christian faith, embodying a spirit of compassion and service that left an indelible mark on those he ministered to.
John’s personality shone through in his kindness and thoughtfulness. Even in times of failing health, he remained focused on helping those around him and shared his warmth and humor with everyone he encountered. He played a pivotal role in transforming the Thomas Marshall building into the Town Life Center in North Manchester, demonstrating his dedication to community betterment.
A passionate football fan, John held a particular affection for the Green Bay Packers. His interest in military history was evident through his collection of miniature soldiers, especially those from the Napoleonic Era. His diverse interests enriched his life and provided engaging conversations for those lucky enough to cross his path.
John will be remembered fondly as a loving husband, father, and friend. He married Ann Spicer on February 25, 1967, and together they had three children: Jeff, Carole, and Jamie. Later in life, he married Brigitte Curtis on November 10, 2001, who brought him alongside more cherished years of companionship.
