John Thomas Dockrey, of So. Chatham, formerly of Randolph-a man whose life was marked by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering love for his family-passed away peacefully at home on August 5, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Randolph on June 2, 1939, to the late John and Julia (Crowley) Dockrey, John's journey was one of accomplishment, service, and joy. He was a proud graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1957. After starting his family, John continued his education at Northeastern University at night, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. His knowledge and interest in computer-aided design systems led to a fulfilling career as a Systems Design Engineer with Johnson & Johnson, where he dedicated over 25 years of expertise before his well-deserved retirement.
John's commitment to his country was evident in his 26 years of service, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. His outstanding leadership and dedication to those with whom he served are reflected in his attainment of the second-highest enlisted rank, as well as several commendations and medals. He was very proud to serve his nation.
Married for 63 years, John was the beloved husband of Edith (Canavan) Dockrey. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter-a true partnership that stood as a testament to their devotion to one another.
John was the loving father of John "Jay" Dockrey and his wife Mame of Scituate, Christine San Antonio of Hingham, Karen Diver of Dalton, and Denise Dockrey of Hingham. His love for his children was only matched by the joy he found in his role as a cherished grandfather to Jake and his wife Isabella Dockrey, Michael Dockrey, Sofia San Antonio, Victor San Antonio, Joseph Diver, Julianna Diver, Autumn Dockrey, and Alia Dockrey.
He is also survived by his devoted brother Thomas Dockrey of Hull, his sister Judith Averill of Bristol, RI, and many adoring nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his siblings Rose McKenzie, Leonard Dockrey, Arthur Dockrey, Dorothy Brophy, and Mary Clancy, but his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
His interests and hobbies were as varied as they were passionate. As an avid Boston sports fan, John landed what he considered the best retirement job possible-as assistant equipment manager for the New England Patriots for several years. There, he got to know the team, earned the nickname "Big John," and experienced several playoff games and Super Bowl wins. But what brought even more joy to John was sharing this experience with his family through tailgates, team events, training camps, fantastic seats, and more Patriots attire than they could ever want. He also enjoyed several years working security at Spring Training for the Boston Red Sox.
Throughout his life, John's commitment to his community was evident in his volunteer work as a youth sports coach, Boy Scouts volunteer, and with Meals on Wheels, bringing meals and a friendly hello to those in need.
Music was a significant part of John's life. He started in a rock band in high school, and his love for classic rock music never waned.
Above all, John loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed family vacations in Wellfleet, reunions in Sebago, and exploring the world with Edith. Whether he was soothing his "hot water bottles" - the sweet nickname he gave to all the babies in the family - on his shoulders with a gentle song, cheering players from the sidelines, seeing kids off on their first days of school, or giving hugs so strong they reached your heart, his life was focused on cherishing every moment and creating unforgettable memories.
John was the epitome of a loving, kind, and dedicated family man. A devout Catholic, he lived his faith through quiet service and deep compassion. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, and the countless ways he touched our lives. His spirit will forever remain a guiding force for his beloved family and friends.
