John E. "Fitzy" Fitzgerald

John E. "Fitzy" Fitzgerald, 73, of Winchendon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Sterling Rehabilitation Center after a long health battle.

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, John was one of three sons of Edward F. Fitzgerald, Sr., and Lillian J. (Michaud) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Northboro, graduated from Algonquin Regional High School in 1969, and went on to attend Boston University.

John spent many years working in telecommunications with several major New England companies before moving into the grocery retail industry with Shaw's, where he worked until his retirement.

Outside of work, John was happiest when he was keeping busy. He had a gift for fixing just about anything-earning him the title of "Mr. Fix-It"-and even built his own home in Winchendon. He had a knack for solving problems, whether it was a leaky faucet or a project that needed an extra set of hands, and he loved being the one people could count on.

What John will be remembered for most, though, is his heart and his sense of humor. He loved a good laugh, often finding joy in simple, silly moments-and had a way of making others laugh right along with him. One of his greatest companions was his grand puppy, Casey, who was his best buddy and constant sidekick. The two of them shared a special bond that brought him so much happiness.

John leaves behind his daughter, Jennifer R. Waleszczak, and her husband, Steven, of Hamburg, New York; his son, Nicholas J.D. Fitzgerald of Winchendon; his former wife, Diane Rollend of Blackstone; his two brothers; along with several nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Lillian Fitzgerald, Sr., and his sister, Phyllis.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit John's family on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Services and burial will be held privately for his family.
