John W. Fleming was born September 9, 1937, in
Wooster, Ohio to Robert C. and Marjorie M. Fleming. He went to Beall Ave Grade School and Wooster High School, graduating in 1955.
Out of high school, John worked at Skall's men's store located in the newly developed shopping center in Wooster's north-end.
In December of 1958, he went to work at Freedlander's department store in the men's clothing department. In January of 1977, he and his wife Jan bought the Johnston-Miller Insurance Agency and remained in that business until 2003.
John served six years as a Supply Sergeant in the United States National Guard. He was also involved in many clubs and organizations, including the YMCA, Jaycee's, 20-30 Club, Rotary and was a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow.
John was a 45-year member of Wooster Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing with many friends over the years. He was very active serving as a volunteer at West View Healthy Living, transferring residents to and from weekly chapel services.
He also served many years on the West View Board of Directors. He was a founding member of Church of the Church of Saviour where he attended 47 years. John and Jan treasured their lifetime small group, which cultivated many special friendships.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brothers, Sam and Stephen Fleming, along with many beloved family members including Woody and Dot Webb and Jim Hart.
For 17 years, John and Jan loved their special Yorkshire Terrier, Pixie, whom John walked every day.
John is survived by his wife Jan of 50 years. Together, they enjoyed travel and simple moments at home inside their gazebo. Their happiest moments were spent on long convertible rides or listening to their special song, "Could I Have This Dance" by Anne Murray. As a couple, they were known for their impeccable style and endearing love.
He is also survived by sister-in-law, FB Fleming, nephew Brad (Brenda) Fleming and sons Jake, Garrett, and Sammy, and niece Carla Fleming. Additionally, John is survived by sister-in-law, Deanna Hart and brother-in-law, Ron (Drema) Webb along with nieces and nephews: John (Sarah-Irene) Donahue, Heather (Rob) Miller, Devin (Ashley) Webb, Heidi (Jason) DeVerna; Surviving Godchildren: Julie Hancock, Amanda Wolfe, Wes and Tyler Chapman.
Honorary Pallbearers: Steve Andrews, John Baker, Charlie Kiper, Jack Miller, and in-spirit, Tom Hardy and Ron Junkin.
John leaves a legacy of steadfast faith, integrity, and generosity and will be dearly missed.
Services will take place on Wednesday, January29, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Saviour in Wooster with Pastor Brent Durham and Pastor Jerry Durham officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday evening at the Church of the Saviour in Wooster from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services (10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.) at the church on Wednesday.
A luncheon will immediately follow the services at the church for family and friends.
A private entombment will follow the luncheon at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Wooster at the convenience of the family.
