John was a friend of mine from my U of L days. We were fraternity brothers in Phi Mu Alpha, the music fraternity. I only deduced that he passed away from a friend's comment on FB, and now I am saddened to realize that it is so. I was pleased by his posts on FB. I was happy to see one of my fellow musicians had continued playing his instrument after all these years and got so much joy from it. Requiescat in pace.

John and I first met at Foster Music Camp and we were friends ever since 1962. John was a very kind soul and a superb musician and family man. Praying for his family in this time of grief.

Mr. Gutermuth was my Trombone instructor and a huge inspiration to me, and his passing was a huge shock to our middle school band...I'll never forget the many techniques he taught me before his passing, and I wish his family well.
