Born on April 3, 1945, in Uvalde, Texas, to Milford L. Hurt and Geraldine Hoisington-Hurt, John Hurt passed away surrounded by love and family. A man defined by his work ethic, strength, and quiet generosity, he spent his life providing for others and finding peace in the simple joys of life.
Growing up, John received his early education through the 5th grade before stepping into the workforce at a young age to support his family. His early years were shaped by farming and frequent moves tied to seasonal work. In 1965, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States military, a commitment he carried with pride.
After his military service, he built a long and respected career in the oil fields-an industry he remained in for most of his adult life. In the late 1980s, he returned to O'Brien, Texas, where he later transitioned into retirement, though he never stopped working. Whether in farming, fixing equipment, or casting a fishing line, he remained active and dedicated until his final days.
Fishing was his favorite pastime-so much so that he was rarely seen without a fishing pole nearby. He was a man who found joy in the outdoors and peace by the water. Above all, he was a devoted father and grandfather who worked tirelessly to care for his family.
John Hurt passed away Sunday August 24, 2025, He is survived by his son, Alvah Overmyer of Knox City, Texas; and children whom he loved and raised as his own: Bobby Joe Sanders (Jerry) of Lake Brownwood, TX; Ronnie Overmyer of Lake Whitney, TX; Donnie Overmyer of Tennessee; and Alyah Overmyer of Knox City, TX.
He also leaves behind his brothers Arthur Hurt, Jimmy Hurt, and Lawrence Hurt; his sisters Beatrice Larison, Adline Coleman, and Myrtle; along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Milford Hurt and Melvin Hurt, and his sister Anna Whipkey.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 9:45 a.m. at North's Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery, where he will be honored with military rites.
He will be remembered for his dedication, resilience, and quiet strength-a man who gave all he had for those he loved
