John E. Lynch, age 79 of Corning, NY passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on September 14, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Mortimer and Dorothy (Hanson) Lynch. John grew up on Long Island and graduated from high school in New Hyde Park.
After graduating from high school, John proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Ingraham. Following his honorable discharge, he worked briefly for the U.S. Postal Service before beginning a distinguished 30-year career with the Nassau County Sheriff's Department. He married Donna Gallup on February 13, 1992.
John was a member of the Corning VFW, the American Legion, and the Nassau County Sheriff's Emerald Society. He was also a former member of the Watkins Glen Yacht Club, where he enjoyed time with friends and fellow boating enthusiasts.
John was a man who found joy and solace in the natural world. He had a deep love for nature, and some of his happiest moments were spent hunting or in the company of his beloved German Shepherds-loyal companions who brought him comfort and friendship over the years. John felt most at peace on the water; whether on a quiet lake or the open ocean, he was always a proud boat owner and captain, navigating with skill and heart until health challenges kept him ashore. A passionate LGB train collector, he took great pride in creating his LGB garden railroad. In earlier years, John was also an enthusiastic RC plane hobbyist, building and piloting an impressive fleet with care and precision. John was a puzzle enthusiast and a devoted Yankees and Jets fan, he cheered on his teams with unwavering spirit. John's life was rich with hobbies, passions, and the simple pleasures he held dear.
John is survived by his loving wife, Donna Lynch of Corning; children: Shawn Lynch of Davenport, FL, Brian Lynch of North Dakota, Tracey (Christopher Asiello) McLaughlin of Corning, Brian (Cindy) Fish of Burdett, NY; grandchildren: Joshua Lynch, Kendra and Makenzie Fish, Colin and Abbey McLaughlin and Christopher's children: Vincenzo and Lachlan Asiello; brothers: Mortimer and Jim (Anne) Lynch; god-daughter and niece, Dorothy Michaels; special niece, Leah Rakowski; and numerous other nieces and a nephew.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Gerry; and his mother and father-in-law, Lenora and Rudolph Gallup.
Family and friends are invited to visitation on Monday, July 21, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 12:00 pm, Fr. Patrick Connor officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot in Ulster Cemetery, Ulster, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name may be sent to CareFirst. 3805 Meads Creek Rd, Painted Post, NY 14870 for the wonderful care provided to John, or to an animal shelter of your choice.

Donna, I am so sorry for your loss. It was a great day when we got to meet you and John at the Watkins Glen Yacht Club. We had some fun times. I can remember a couple times of having to fish a dog out of the water. Mark and John had a great friendship, and now they can meet again to do some more shenanigans together. I will be in touch with you. Condolences to all the family. BIG HUG.
