John Marks Obituary

John was a graduate of Holy Rosary Institute and took mechanical classes at T.H. Harris Vocational School. He was employed at Charity (UMC) Hospital as a cook for 38 years, and at the age of 47 he retired. He was a hard worker, jack of all trades and a provider for the family. He decided to start the first lawncare service in Lafayette while still employed at the hospital. Over the years, John was the lawnman for hundreds of residential properties along with several businesses and apartment complexes. John maintained Bristol Place Condominiums for over 40 years until January of 2024. A man with a serious face, but a smile so big it would light up a dark room, he enjoyed life and loved his family. He enjoyed clowning with his grandchildren and great grandchildren (just about everyone had a nickname).
John married Rosella Pratt Marks on April 21, 1957. They were blessed with three kids John, Sonja, and Valerie.
John is survived by his son John "June" (Sandra) Marks, Jr. and one daughter Sonja "Tank" (Jude) Henry. Nine (9) grandchildren: Bomani "Lil Pop", Kaylin, Shukura "Chew Chew', Kendell "Popie", Rashida "Sheet Sheet", Cherrelle "San Antone", Mariah" Woopie", Azara "TA", "best friend", and Daeshauna "Mini", 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. His godchild Sandra Booker "Sanny", 2 cousins who were more like sisters Mary Ann & Juanita and a host of relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rosella, his daughter Valerie "Meat" Marks and his parents Louise and McGaffey Sam.

We will always remember his warm smile, his kindness shared to many through his wonderful work caring for God`s green vegetations. John was a loyal customer to us for years. Visiting with him was always a pleasure. His positive image and fond memories are blessings to our lives. Rest in peace

Imet Mr. John on the UL campus when he was caring for the Tri DeltA House. I was impressed and asked him to take care of our property. Others in the neighborhoo hired him as well. He was a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. out of town travel will prevent me from attending hi service. May he rest in peace.
