John was born in 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Edward and Lottie Masterson, the brother of Catherine Masterson.
He married Roberta (maiden name Silver) in 1979.
He attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, which had a gifted and talented student body. He next studied at Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, where he received a BA degree in Physics.
In 1981 he began his teaching career in the Department of Mathematics at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor. He received a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Rutgers University, during the same time that he was teaching at Seton Hall.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Lehrer Gibilisco Funeral Home located at 275 West Milton Avenue in Rahway, NJ.

1st let me say how saddened I was to learn of John's passing and how I regret not being at his memorial service yesterday as I only heard of his passing this morning. John was a fantastic math professor, I took both vector calculus and linear algebra with him which gave birth to my lifelong interest in physics. He opened up a brand-new world for me.He was not only a remarkable professor but a remarkable man instead. After many years of my brain aneurism going undiagnosed and misdiagnosed my so many professionals, and yerd of disruption to my life, John recommended a neurologist he knew of in NY. It was discovered after an MRI tht I had 2 brain lesions as a result of the aneurism I had suffered almost 14 yrs earlier. I was finally given an accurate diagnoses and after another 3 yrs of appropriate medication and treatment I was healed. In John's caring enough to listen to me, he sent me on a course which set in motion the necessary steps for me to regain my life. Thany you John, I will always be grateful, I will always appreciate having had the extreme pleasure of knowing you.
